Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,357 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 353 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport, taking 11 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 23, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 173 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 5 knots from 179 degrees, resulting in a 4-knot crosswind and a 3-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 2 miles west of CYYZ, rising from an altitude of 1,594 feet above sea level to 35,165 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,570 feet, in 21 minutes and covering a distance of 116 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase started 20 miles south of Tobermory Airport and lasted for 95 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 600 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase began 13 miles east of Northwest Angle Airport in the United States, where the aircraft descended from an altitude of 34,804 feet above sea level to 2,057 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,748 feet, in 18 minutes and covering a distance of 106 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 36 at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading at 8.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,263 feet above ground level and 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing took place on runway 36, which had a length of 3,357 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 138 knots. However, the touchdown point was 87 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 136 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -372 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.7 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -1 degree Celsius, a wind speed of 22 knots from 80 degrees, resulting in a 20-knot crosswind and a 7-knot headwind.
The total landing distance was 1,405 meters, which was 42% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 832 nautical miles, taking 151 minutes, and the aircraft used 5,896 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at Winnipeg / James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (CYWG) with a score of 96.1%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south, heading 8.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,263 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 36, which has a length of 3,357 meters.
The landing was executed with good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 138 knots. However, the touchdown point was slightly beyond the designated touchdown zone, occurring 87 meters past the threshold. The touchdown speed of 136 knots was a bit faster than ideal, resulting in a firm touchdown rate of -372 feet per minute (fpm).
The runway touchdown position was not perfectly aligned with the centerline, deviating by 5.7 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing included a temperature of -1°C, with a wind speed of 22 knots from a direction of 80°. This resulted in a crosswind of 20 knots and a headwind of 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,405 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway length. Despite the slightly longer landing distance, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled deceleration of the aircraft after touchdown. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft coming to a stop in a relatively short distance and with minimal deviation from the centerline.
