Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,055 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,055 m of the 4,487 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,436 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from UKBB Boryspil International Airport, the Boeing 777-200ER began its journey with a taxiing period of 7 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles to reach the runway. The aircraft then took off from runway 36R, utilizing 1,418 meters, or 36% of the runway, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 165 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 21°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 278°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute cruise altitude, it ascended from 1,387 feet above sea level to 35,001 feet, an increase of 33,614 feet, in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 129 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase that followed lasted for 209 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 1,768 nautical miles. The descent phase began 43 miles northeast of UASC Moinkum Airport Shu, with the aircraft descending from 34,245 feet to 24,573 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 23 nautical miles. The final descent phase, which started 10 miles northwest of Bayqongyr, saw the aircraft descend from 24,573 feet to 3,529 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 81 nautical miles.
The Boeing 777-200ER then commenced its final approach to runway 05L at UAAA Almaty International Airport, touching down 1,023 meters beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 139 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -318 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 1,978 meters, or 44% of the runway. Following a taxiing period of 4 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles, the aircraft came to a stop at the parking area. The total flight distance was 2,012 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 256 minutes, and the aircraft consumed 27,005 kilograms of fuel during the journey.
The Boeing 777-200ER touched down on runway 05L at UAAA Almaty International Airport, marking a satisfactory conclusion to the approach from the south west. The aircraft's descent was characterized by a well-executed approach quality, with a threshold height of 75 ft agl, significantly above the target, indicating a stable and controlled descent. The threshold speed of 143 kt was within acceptable limits, demonstrating the crew's ability to manage the aircraft's energy state effectively.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed of 139 kt was slightly above the target, resulting in a firm touchdown rate of -318 fpm. However, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the crew maintained excellent control of the aircraft's direction. The touchdown point was located 1,023 m beyond the touchdown zone, which, while not ideal, did not compromise the safety of the operation. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 22 °C and a gentle headwind of 1 kt, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing.
The aircraft's rollout was characterized by excellent alignment, with the aircraft remaining centered on the runway. The total landing distance of 1,978 m, accounting for 44% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits. Overall, the landing was considered satisfactory, with a score of 85.5% reflecting the crew's ability to manage the aircraft's energy state and maintain control throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
