Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,285 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 366 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Wellington International Airport, taking approximately 7 minutes to cover a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 34, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 168 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 21 knots from a direction of 0 degrees, resulting in a headwind of 21 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it passed overhead the SB14 Wellington VOR, marking the beginning of the enroute climb phase. The aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,009 feet above sea level to 29,450 feet, an increase of 28,441 feet, in 18 minutes and covering a distance of 113 nautical miles. Following this, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 9 minutes and covered a distance of 71 nautical miles, starting 22 miles north of Waverley in the Taranaki region of New Zealand.
The enroute descent phase began 4 miles east of the Taharoa Aerodrome, with the aircraft descending from an altitude of 28,642 feet to 3,324 feet, a decrease of 25,317 feet, in 14 minutes and covering a distance of 74 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, lasting 5 minutes and covering a distance of 10 nautical miles, starting 6 miles northeast of the Ardmore Airport in the Auckland region.
The final approach to runway 23L at Auckland International Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 251.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,283 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 3,285 meters, with the threshold height being slightly above the target and the threshold speed being good at 149 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 368 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 145 knots, resulting in a heavy touchdown rate of -620 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect after the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 119 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,174 meters, which was 36% of the runway length. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 275 nautical miles, taking a total of 56 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,893 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Auckland International Airport, achieving a score of 95.1%. The final approach to runway 23L was initiated from the east, heading 251.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,283 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 145 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. However, the touchdown distance of 368 meters was within the acceptable range. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots from 119°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, and there was a slight tailwind of 3 knots. These conditions contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The aircraft's performance during the landing was generally good, with a threshold height slightly above the target at 60 feet agl. The threshold speed was also within the acceptable range at 149 knots. However, the touchdown rate was heavy at -620 feet per minute (fpm), indicating that the aircraft touched down with a significant amount of deceleration.
The total landing distance of 1,174 meters was 36% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft maintained its alignment with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, with a score of 95.1%. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and touchdown rate.
