Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,716 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,716 m of the 3,671 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,028 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777F departed NZAA Auckland International Airport on runway 23L, employing a take-off roll of 1,056 m which represented 29 % of the available runway. Liftoff was achieved at 173 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 18 °C with a wind from 250° at 10 kt; the cross-wind component was zero and the head-wind component was 10 kt.
Climb commenced one mile south-west of the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,038 ft asl to 1,509 ft asl, a gain of 471 ft achieved in one minute while covering five nautical miles.
Level cruise began three miles south of NZAA and was maintained for four minutes, during which the aircraft travelled twelve nautical miles at a constant altitude.
The final approach to runway 23L was executed from the east on a heading of 248.0°, with the aircraft positioned four nautical miles out and at 1,169 ft agl.
A go-around was initiated on runway 23L at an altitude of 22 ft agl, after which the flight resumed a subsequent approach and landing sequence.
Landing was completed on runway 23L, whose total length is 3,671 m. The threshold height of 72 ft agl was above the target, and the threshold speed of 152 kt was slightly above the target. Touchdown occurred 607 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, at a speed of 124 kt and a vertical rate of minus 270 fpm. The touchdown point was offset by 5.6 m from the centreline. Weather at the time was 17 °C with a wind from 240° at 10 kt, a cross-wind component of 2 kt and a head-wind component of 10 kt. The total landing distance recorded was 1,630 m, representing 44 % of the runway length.
During rollout the aircraft’s alignment was measured at a deviation of 9.4 m from the centreline.
In total the flight covered 42 nm, required 15 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 26,891 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 23L at NZAA Auckland International Airport was flown from the east on a heading of 248.0° at 4 nm and 1,169 ft agl. At the 1,000 ft gate the approach was assessed as stabilised, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits. Local weather was 17 °C with a wind of 10 kt from 240°, including a 2 kt cross-wind component and a 10 kt head-wind.
At threshold the aircraft encountered a height of 72 ft agl, which was well above the target, and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 152 kt.
Touchdown occurred 607 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 124 kt, judged good, and a vertical rate of -270 fpm, judged fair. The touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 5.6 m from the centreline, and the total landing distance was 1,630 m, representing 44 % of the runway length.
During rollout the aircraft remained slightly misaligned by 9.4 m from the centreline.
Reduce the touchdown point distance to bring the landing closer to the intended aim point and tighten centreline tracking on both touchdown and rollout to improve overall alignment.
