Improve the pattern downwind leg
Spacing cues are relative to your eyepoint, so two simmers with different FOV settings following the same wingtip cue fly patterns half a mile different in width, and a wide FOV compresses depth so the runway on base looks further away than it is, biasing you towards a late turn. Pick a camera position and FOV, save it, and never change it, because every judgement you calibrate is calibrated to that picture.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,004 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 772 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight was conducted in a HU-16 Albatross aircraft, departing from runway 05 at KSFZ North Central State Airport. Taxiing from the parking area to the runway took approximately 8 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its departure roll, using 2,644 feet of the runway, which is 53% of its total length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 98 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 67°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 188°. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 8 knots. The aircraft entered the right-hand pattern from runway 05, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 21 seconds. The pattern crosswind leg was also flown to the right, with a distance of less than 1 nautical mile covered in 20 seconds.
The aircraft then proceeded to the downwind turn, which had a distance of 2 nautical miles and an angle to the runway of 45 degrees, or 24.1°. The downwind leg itself was short, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 14 seconds. The final approach was made to runway 23 from the north-east, with a heading of 211.0° at an altitude of 1 nautical mile and 237 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 23 was successful, with a threshold speed that was slightly below the target at 81 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 769 feet, and the touchdown speed was also good at 74 knots. The touchdown rate was excellent at -74 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 64°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 192°, resulting in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 3,025 feet, which is 60% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 5 nautical miles, and the flight used 101 pounds of fuel, taking a total of 9 minutes to complete.
The HU-16 Albatross aircraft successfully landed at KSFZ North Central State Airport, showcasing exceptional piloting skills and adherence to standard operating procedures. The aircraft approached the runway from the northeast, aligning itself with the runway at a heading of 211.0°, approximately 1 nautical mile away and at an altitude of 237 feet above ground level.
Upon reaching the runway threshold, the aircraft touched down with a speed of 81 knots, which was slightly below the target threshold speed. However, this did not compromise the overall performance of the landing, as the touchdown distance of 769 feet was well within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 74 knots was also satisfactory, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
One of the most impressive aspects of this landing was the touchdown rate, which was an excellent -74 feet per minute. This rate suggests that the aircraft was able to touch down with minimal impact, reducing the risk of damage to the aircraft and minimizing the stress on the landing gear.
The runway touchdown alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway and that the pilots had successfully managed the crosswind component. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 64°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from 192°, presented a moderate headwind component of 8 knots, which the pilots effectively managed.
The total landing distance of 3,025 feet was 60% of the available runway length, which is a respectable performance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots had maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing roll and had successfully brought it to a stop without any issues.
Overall, this landing was a testament to the skills and experience of the pilots involved, as well as the capabilities of the HU-16 Albatross aircraft. The successful execution of the landing, despite the moderate headwind component, demonstrates the aircraft's ability to perform well in a variety of weather conditions.
