Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,043 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 416 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport, taking approximately 9 minutes to cover a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 10, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 164 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 14°C, with a wind speed of 12 knots at a direction of 39°.
The crosswind component was 11 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile east of the airport and reaching a height of 31,419 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 111 nautical miles and took 19 minutes to complete, with the aircraft increasing its altitude by 30,405 feet.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles northwest of Portoferraio, Italy. This phase lasted for 16 minutes and covered a distance of 125 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 14 miles west of Anzio, Italy, and descending from a height of 31,654 feet to 1,774 feet above sea level. This descent phase took 18 minutes to complete and covered a distance of 92 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06 at Naples International Airport was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading at an angle of 55.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,463 feet above ground level. However, the aircraft was required to perform a go-around at an altitude of 340 feet above ground level.
The aircraft then made a successful landing on runway 06, with a touchdown speed of 125 knots and a touchdown distance of 417 meters. The touchdown rate was fair at -266 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots at a direction of 120°.
The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,359 meters, which was 67% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile.
Overall, the flight covered a total distance of 343 nautical miles and took 90 minutes to complete, using 3,563 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at LIRN Naples International Airport, achieving a high score of 98.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 55.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,463 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, aligning the aircraft with the runway threshold.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 06, which has a length of 2,043 meters. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 132 knots, indicating a well-executed landing. The touchdown distance of 417 meters was also within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 125 knots was good. However, the touchdown rate of -266 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the pilot could have achieved a smoother touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 11°C and a gentle wind of 6 knots from 120°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. These conditions did not pose a significant challenge to the pilot, and the aircraft was able to maintain a stable approach.
The total landing distance of 1,359 meters was 67% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This indicates that the pilot was able to maintain a high level of control and precision throughout the landing. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot was able to smoothly transition from the landing phase to the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and control, resulting in a score of 98.8%. The pilot's ability to navigate the aircraft through the final approach and landing phases was impressive, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory.
