Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,483 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 423 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 05 at Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo, also known as LPMA. The Airbus A320 took off with a takeoff distance of 384 meters, which is 15% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 153 knots, indicating a smooth and efficient takeoff.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots at a direction of 50 degrees. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 11 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Machico, Madeira, Portugal, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,194 feet above sea level to 1,841 feet above sea level, an increase of 647 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
After reaching the desired altitude, the aircraft began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile south east of LPMA Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo. The descent was from an altitude of 1,836 feet above sea level to 336 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,500 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05 at LPMA Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo was from the south west, with a heading of 45.0 degrees at an altitude of 159 feet above ground level and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was smooth, with a threshold speed that was slightly above the target at 122 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 423 meters, and the touchdown speed was also good at 112 knots.
The touchdown rate was fair at -269 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions during landing were a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 8 knots at a direction of 50 degrees, with a crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind component of 8 knots. The total landing distance was 1,130 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The total flight distance was 6 nautical miles, taking approximately 3 minutes to complete, and the aircraft used 120 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was smooth and efficient, with good landing and takeoff distances, and perfect runway alignment.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo, achieving a high score of 99.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 45.0° at an altitude of 159 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. This indicates a precise and controlled descent, setting the stage for a smooth landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed on runway 05, which has a length of 2,483 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, suggesting that the aircraft was at the correct altitude when it touched down. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 122 knots, which may indicate a slight deviation from the ideal approach speed. Nevertheless, the touchdown distance of 423 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively after touchdown.
The touchdown speed of 112 knots was also reported as good, suggesting that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -269 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, indicating that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or oscillation after touchdown. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 50°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 8 knots, which may have affected the aircraft's approach and landing. However, the pilots were able to compensate for these conditions and achieve a successful landing.
The total landing distance of 1,130 meters was 45% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively after touchdown and maintain a stable rollout. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline throughout the rollout phase.
Overall, the Airbus A320's landing at Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo was a success, with a high score of 99.3%. While there were some minor deviations from the ideal approach and landing, the pilots were able to compensate for these conditions and achieve a smooth and controlled landing.
