Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 305 m and 152 m above the runway.
At the 152 m gate: off the runway's 3° glideslope.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,000 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 391 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question began with taxiing from the parking bay to the runway at LICG Pantelleria Airport, which took 11 minutes and resulted in the aircraft covering less than 1 nautical mile. As it departed from runway 08, the aircraft accelerated to a takeoff speed of 113 kt and managed to lift off the ground within 895 meters, which is an impressive 52% of the runway's length.
Under the current local weather conditions, characterized by a temperature of 27°C and winds blowing at 5 kt from a direction of 229°, a relatively gentle takeoff was achieved. The crosswind component was minimal, measuring 2 kt, and the tailwind component added 5 kt to the aircraft's speed, making for smoother takeoff and landing conditions.
Upon departure, the enroute climb began 1 mile east of Pantelleria, Sicilia, Italy, with the aircraft rising from an altitude of 406 meters to 4,426 meters in just 12 minutes while covering a distance of 31 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started 26 miles south west of Mazara del Vallo, Sicilia, Italy, and lasted 13 minutes, during which the aircraft maintained its altitude while covering 50 nautical miles.
However, as the enroute descent commenced 4 miles west of Camporeale, Sicilia, Italy, the aircraft rapidly descended to an altitude of 534 meters from its cruising height of 4,470 meters within 12 minutes while covering a distance of 21 nautical miles. The second enroute level cruise started 2 miles north west of Isola delle Femmine, Sicilia, Italy, and lasted 5 minutes, during which the aircraft covered less than 1 nautical mile.
As the aircraft approached the destination airport, it began its final approach to runway 25 at LICJ Falcone–Borsellino Airport, having come from the north east with a heading of 247° at a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft was flying at an altitude of 376.9 meters above ground level at this point. The landing occurred on runway 25, which is 3,000 meters long, and the aircraft's performance met most expectations in terms of touchdown location and speed.
The aircraft's touchdown speed of 112 kt was a bit higher than desired, leading to a higher-than-expected touchdown rate of -2.5 m/s. The touchdown distance was within acceptable limits at 388 meters, but the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.8 meters. Additionally, the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 29°C and winds blowing at 7 kt from a direction of 350°, with a crosswind component of 7 kt and a tailwind of 2 kt.
Upon landing, the aircraft continued its rollout, which resulted in misalignment from the centreline by 18.6 meters. The total landing distance of 974 meters was 32% of the runway's length. Taxiing back to the parking bay took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. Overall, the aircraft consumed 441 kg of fuel during the flight, which covered a total distance of 110 nautical miles within 51 minutes.
The aircraft in question, an ATR 72, successfully landed on runway 25 at the Falcone–Borsellino Airport (LICJ), however, the approach was not without some minor issues.
The final approach was initiated from a position 4 nautical miles away and at an altitude of 376.9 meters above ground level (agl), heading in the direction of 247.0° from the northeast. The pilot then successfully landed the aircraft on the runway.
One notable anomaly was that the aircraft descended below the target threshold height by approximately 17.3 meters agl. This resulted in the aircraft touching down on the runway before reaching its desired altitude. However, the touchdown speed of 112 knots was slightly above the target speed but within an acceptable range for safe landing conditions.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's touchdown rate of -2.5 meters per second was steeper than usual. This could be a result of various factors including pilot input or aircraft performance issues, and may require additional review to determine the cause. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position indicated that the aircraft's wheels made contact with the runway 4.8 meters to one side of the centerline, indicating a slight misalignment.
The local weather conditions at the time were warm, with a temperature of 29°C, and a wind of 7 knots blowing from 350°. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a slight tailwind of 2 knots, which may have affected the pilot's ability to land the aircraft precisely.
In terms of the aircraft's overall performance, the total landing distance of 974 meters was 32% of the runway's length, indicating that the aircraft slowed down sufficiently soon after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was also found to be slightly off by 18.6 meters from the centerline. This could result in the aircraft drifting off course and potentially impacting airport operations.
Overall, the landing was deemed successful, but there are areas that require improvement, specifically the pilot's control over altitude, touchdown speed, and runway alignment during rollout.
