Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,202 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 420 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Dubrovnik Ruđer Bošković Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 11, with a takeoff distance of 1,579 meters, which was 50% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 22 knots at a direction of 49 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 21 knots and a headwind of 8 knots. The aircraft climbed to an altitude of 35,742 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,204 feet from the initial altitude of 1,538 feet, in 18 minutes and covering a distance of 67 nautical miles.
The enroute climb started overhead Cilipi, Croatia, and continued until the aircraft reached its cruising altitude. The enroute level cruise then began 11 miles south west of Shengjin, Albania, and lasted for 27 minutes, covering a distance of 215 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 1 mile north west of Anavra, Greece, and descending from an altitude of 35,678 feet to 1,561 feet in 21 minutes and covering a distance of 96 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03L at Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport was made from the south west, heading 37.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,270 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 03L, which had a length of 3,202 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed of 150 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 424 meters, but the touchdown speed of 141 knots was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -272 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 20 knots at a direction of 30 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 20 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,432 meters, which was 45% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking approximately 7 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 386 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 82 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 2,996 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 03L at LGAV Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing procedures. The aircraft's final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 37.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,270 feet above ground level.
The landing was executed with a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway and was at the correct altitude for touchdown. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 150 kt, which may have resulted in a slightly longer landing distance. The touchdown distance of 424 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and slow down effectively during the landing.
Despite a slightly fast touchdown speed of 141 kt, the aircraft's touchdown rate of -272 feet per minute was fair, suggesting that the pilot was able to manage the descent and touchdown effectively. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway and was able to maintain control during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and a wind speed of 20 kt at 30°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, while the headwind component was 20 kt, which helped to reduce the landing distance. The total landing distance of 1,432 meters was 45% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and slow down effectively during the landing.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability during the rollout phase of the landing. Overall, the Airbus A320's landing on runway 03L at LGAV Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport was a successful and well-executed procedure, demonstrating the aircraft's capabilities and the pilot's proficiency in its operation.
