Improve the rollout
A crosswind landing is a geometry problem. The air mass you're flying in is moving sideways across the runway, and you need your ground track down the centreline with your wheels aligned to it at the moment of contact. There are two techniques that will help, the crab and the sideslip.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,469 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,469 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 85 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an A400M, then departed from runway 25 at DAON Zenata – Messali El Hadj Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,088 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 310 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The aircraft climbed from 1,867 feet above sea level to 32,306 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,438 feet, in 13 minutes and covering 72 nautical miles.
The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile southwest of DAON Zenata – Messali El Hadj Airport, and the aircraft continued to climb until it reached its cruising altitude. The enroute level cruise started 38 miles south of San Jose, Andalusia, Spain, and lasted for 76 minutes, covering 499 nautical miles. During this period, the aircraft maintained a steady altitude and speed.
The enroute descent started 3 miles northwest of Biscarrosse, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, and the aircraft descended from 31,727 feet above sea level to 2,919 feet above sea level, a decrease of 28,808 feet, in 14 minutes and covering 74 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 1 mile southwest of Saint-Sulpice-de-Royan, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 27 at LFBH La Rochelle-Île de Ré Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 273.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,267 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 82 meters and a touchdown speed of 128 knots. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -418 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 17.5 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 12 knots at 340 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 11 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 1,324 meters, which accounted for 90% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 21.6 meters from the centreline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 684 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 127 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 43,780 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The A400M aircraft successfully landed at LFBH La Rochelle-Île de Ré Airport, achieving an overall score of 80.2%. The final approach to runway 27 was initiated from the east, with a heading of 273.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,267 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 1,469 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 128 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 82 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 128 knots was also within acceptable limits. Unfortunately, the touchdown rate was hard, with a rate of -418 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate a slightly aggressive approach.
The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned from the centreline by 17.5 meters, which may have been due to factors such as crosswind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 13°C, with a wind speed of 12 knots from 340°. The crosswind component was 11 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,324 meters was 90% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was also misaligned from the centreline by 21.6 meters, which may indicate a loss of directional control during the rollout phase. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown rate and runway alignment.
