Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,319 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,319 ft of the 7,834 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 4,092 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Cessna 750 Citation X taxied from the parking area to runway 26 at PACD Cold Bay Airport in a period of 9 minutes, covering a ground distance of 2 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 26, the aircraft accelerated through a takeoff distance of 1,170 ft, representing 23 % of the runway length, and achieved liftoff at 138 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 54 °F with a wind from 269° at 26 kt, providing a headwind component of 26 kt and a cross-wind component of 2 kt.
The climb commenced approximately 1 mile west of PACD, with the airplane climbing from 1,104 ft asl to 44,009 ft asl, a gain of 42,905 ft. This ascent was completed in 21 minutes while traversing 127 nm.
Level cruise began 33 nm north-west of Akutan and continued for 34 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 263 nm at cruise altitude.
Descent operations were initiated 58 nm north-east of PAAK Atka Airport, descending from 43,901 ft asl to 1,153 ft asl, a loss of 42,748 ft. The descent lasted 25 minutes and spanned 142 nm.
The final approach to runway 23 at PADK Adak Airport was conducted from the north-east, on a heading of 240.0° at a distance of 4 nm and an altitude of 1,129 ft agl.
Landing on runway 23, which measures 7,834 ft, occurred with a threshold height of 183 ft agl that was noted as excessively over target, while the threshold speed was recorded as 125 kt. The touchdown point was beyond the midpoint of the runway, using more than 50 % of the available length, and the aircraft touched down at 134 kt, a speed described as too fast. The vertical speed at touchdown was a firm minus 393 fpm, and the touchdown location was offset 32 ft from the centreline. Local weather at the time was a temperature of 64 °F with a wind from 250° at 14 kt, providing a headwind component of 14 kt and a cross-wind component of 2 kt. The total landing distance recorded was 5,929 ft, representing 76 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was observed to be misaligned by 63 ft from the centreline as the aircraft decelerated to a stop.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 541 nm, required 97 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 2 lb of fuel.
The Cessna 750 Citation X on a final approach to runway 23 at PADK Adak Airport was aligned from the north-east on a heading of 240.0° at 4 nm and 1,129 ft AGL. The local weather was 64 °F with wind 14 kt from 250°, a 2 kt crosswind component and a 14 kt head-wind.
At threshold the aircraft was 183 ft AGL, which was excessively over target, while the threshold speed of 125 kt was good.
Touchdown occurred well beyond the aim point, using more than 50 % of the 7,834 ft runway, and the speed at touchdown was 134 kt, which was too fast. The aircraft settled with a firm rate of -393 fpm, and the touchdown point was misaligned by 32 ft from the centreline. Total landing distance was 5,929 ft, representing 76 % of the runway.
During rollout the aircraft remained misaligned, drifting 63 ft from the centreline.
Reduce the touchdown point distance by establishing the aim point near the 300 m (1,000 ft) mark and manage speed to stay closer to the target VREF, which will shorten the landing roll and improve alignment. Maintaining a stable flare at the correct height will also help achieve a smoother touchdown and better centreline tracking.
