MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,553 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,025 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 29 at PADQ Kodiak Airport in Kodiak, Alaska. The takeoff distance was 1,446 feet, which accounted for 33% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 127 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 1 knot at 269°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot. After departing from PADQ Kodiak Airport, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and reached an altitude of 38,037 feet above sea level. The climb was a significant increase of 37,147 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 69 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 25 miles north of KPR Port Williams Seaplane Base in Port Williams, Alaska. This phase lasted for 14 minutes and covered a distance of 94 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 5 miles northwest of Kasilof, Alaska. The descent was a decrease of 36,603 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 58 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its final approach to runway 07L at PANC Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport from the west. The aircraft was heading at 91.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,271 feet above ground level. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 1 knot at 269°, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot.
The aircraft landed on runway 07L, which had a length of 10,553 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 109 knots. The touchdown point was 2,311 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 105 knots, which was fast. However, the touchdown rate was excellent at -86 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 231 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 62 minutes. The aircraft used 1,347 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed at PANC Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, achieving an overall score of 85.1%. The final approach to runway 07L was initiated from the west, with a heading of 91.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,271 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 2,311 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a significant distance. The touchdown speed of 105 knots was also faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have been able to slow down the aircraft more efficiently. However, the touchdown rate of -86 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, demonstrating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 269°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a slight tailwind of 1 knot. The runway length of 10,553 feet was more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance of 4,621 feet, which accounted for 44% of the runway.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and controlled approach. The runway rollout alignment was also excellent, demonstrating a smooth and controlled deceleration of the aircraft after touchdown. Overall, the landing was successful, but there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and distance from the touchdown zone.
