Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,033 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 334 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking to the runway at London Gatwick Airport, taking 7 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 26L, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 157 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 13°C, with a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 239°.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Charlwood, Surrey, England, where the aircraft ascended from 1,200 feet above sea level to 4,872 feet above sea level, an increase of 3,672 feet in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile south east of Godstone, Surrey, England, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. However, the aircraft soon began another climb, this time from 4,902 feet above sea level to 36,479 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,578 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 145 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it started its descent, first from 36,477 feet above sea level to 34,471 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,005 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then resumed 22 miles west of Zandvoort, Provincie Noord-Holland, The Netherlands, lasting for 16 minutes and covering a distance of 122 nautical miles.
The final descent began 2 miles north east of Bellingwolde, Provincie Groningen, The Netherlands, where the aircraft descended from 34,556 feet above sea level to 1,265 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,291 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 52 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 09 at Bremen Airport, flying from the west at a heading of 88.0° and at an altitude of 1,236 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 09, which had a length of 2,033 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 136 knots.
However, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 134 knots, and the touchdown rate was hard at -440 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.6 meters from the centreline. The total landing distance was 1,045 meters, which was 51% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking from the runway, taking 5 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 356 nautical miles, taking 79 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,649 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at EDDW Bremen Airport, achieving a score of 95.6%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 88.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,236 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the local weather conditions, which included a temperature of 8°C and a gentle wind of 5 knots at 110°.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 09, which has a length of 2,033 meters. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 136 knots, indicating a well-executed approach. However, the touchdown speed of 134 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate of -440 feet per minute (fpm).
The touchdown distance of 336 meters was within acceptable limits, and the runway touchdown position was only slightly misaligned by 5.6 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions, with a 5-knot headwind and a 2-knot crosswind, did not significantly impact the landing. The total landing distance of 1,045 meters was 51% of the runway length, which is a reasonable figure considering the aircraft's size and weight.
One area for improvement was the runway rollout alignment, which was very good, but the touchdown rate was hard, indicating that the pilot may have applied too much reverse thrust or braking. Nevertheless, the overall performance of the Airbus A321 was satisfactory, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and judgment in executing a safe and controlled landing at EDDW Bremen Airport.
