Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: no landing flap set.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,230 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,230 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 353 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 36 at EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield, where the Bonanza G36 aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 402 meters, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 76 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots at 31 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airfield, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Reichelsheim, a town in Hessen, Germany. The climb was relatively steep, with the aircraft rising from an altitude of 1,498 feet above sea level to 1,510 feet in less than a minute, covering a distance of less than a nautical mile. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 36 at EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 355.0 degrees at an altitude of 671 feet above ground level and a distance of 1 nautical mile from the runway threshold. The landing was executed on runway 36, which had a length of 1,230 meters. The threshold speed was higher than the target speed, reaching 88 knots, and the touchdown distance was good at 353 meters. However, the touchdown speed was slightly fast at 74 knots, and the touchdown rate was good at -190 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 12.4 meters, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 10.9 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 620 meters, which accounted for 50% of the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at takeoff, with a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 8 knots at 33 degrees.
The total flight distance was 9 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 6 minutes. The aircraft used 3 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was executed smoothly, with the aircraft performing well in terms of climb, cruise, and landing. However, there were some minor issues with alignment during the landing phase.
The Bonanza G36 aircraft successfully landed at EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield, achieving a score of 92.8%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 355.0° at 1 nautical mile and 671 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 36, which has a length of 1,230 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was above the target at 88 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft earlier, resulting in a smoother touchdown. The touchdown distance of 353 meters was good, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent. However, the touchdown speed of 74 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a slightly longer rollout.
The touchdown rate of -190 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating that the pilot had a good sense of the aircraft's rate of descent. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.4 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the final approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 4°C and a wind speed of 8 knots at 33°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 6 knots. These conditions may have affected the pilot's ability to maintain a straight course during the final approach.
The total landing distance of 620 meters was 50% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and rollout. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.9 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the rollout. Overall, the landing was satisfactory, but there is room for improvement in terms of maintaining a straight course during the final approach and rollout.
