Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,373 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,373 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 337 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The 3.85 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a British Aerospace 146-200, then departed from runway 29C at YSBK Sydney Bankstown Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,138 meters, which was 90% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 135 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 20 knots from a direction of 191 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 18 knots and a tailwind of 8 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead Lansvale, a town in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The climb took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 47 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,019 feet above sea level to 22,109 feet above sea level, an increase of 21,090 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 8 miles south of South Bowenfels. This phase lasted for 182 minutes and covered a distance of 163 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 15 miles northwest of Condobolin, another town in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The descent took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 18 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 22,183 feet above sea level to 881 feet above sea level, a decrease of 21,302 feet.
The final approach to runway 01 at YCDO Condobolin Airport was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading at 28.0 degrees and at an altitude of 172 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 01, which had a length of 1,373 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 202 knots. The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, and the touchdown speed was excessively fast at 185 knots. The touchdown rate was also very heavy at -856 feet per minute. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 15.5 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 147 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,187 meters, which was 86% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also significantly misaligned by 32.1 meters from the centerline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 232 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 45 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 5,986 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The British Aerospace 146-200 aircraft landed at YCDO Condobolin Airport, with a final approach heading of 28.0° from the southwest. The aircraft was at an altitude of 172 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was conducted on runway 01, which has a length of 1,373 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 202 knots. This indicates that the aircraft was not slowed down sufficiently before touching down on the runway. As a result, the touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed of 185 knots was also excessively fast, which contributed to the heavy touchdown rate of -856 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 15.5 meters from the centerline, indicating that the aircraft was not aligned properly with the runway during the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were a temperature of 14°C, with a wind speed of 5 knots from 147°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the tailwind was 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,187 meters, which is 86% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft took a significant amount of time to come to a stop after landing. The runway rollout alignment was also significantly misaligned by 32.1 meters from the centerline, further highlighting the issues with the landing.
Overall, the landing was not executed smoothly, with several issues contributing to a less-than-ideal outcome. The excessively high threshold speed, fast touchdown speed, and heavy touchdown rate all contributed to a long and misaligned landing. The misaligned runway touchdown position and rollout alignment further compounded the problems.
