Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 3,006 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 3,006 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,137 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Boeing 747-400 aircraft, departing from runway 31L at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (LHBP). The takeoff distance covered 947 meters, which is 32% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 157 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile west of LHBP, rising from an altitude of 1,486 feet above sea level to 6,799 feet above sea level. This climb of 5,313 feet was achieved in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then leveled off at the cruising altitude.
Later, the aircraft began its enroute descent 1 mile southwest of Ecser, Hungary, descending from 6,684 feet above sea level to 1,867 feet above sea level. This descent of 4,817 feet was also achieved in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 31L at LHBP.
The final approach was made from the southeast, heading 315.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,405 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on runway 31L, which has a length of 3,006 meters. However, the threshold height at 81 feet above ground level was significantly above the target, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 162 knots.
The touchdown point was 732 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 152 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was also smooth at -106 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.5 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 3,127 meters, which is 104% of the runway length.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 1 minute and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 13 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 9 minutes. The aircraft used 2,373 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft in question, a Boeing 742, has completed a landing at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (LHBP) with a score of 60.8%. The final approach was initiated from the south east, heading 315.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,405 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing on runway 31L, the aircraft demonstrated a significant deviation from the target threshold height, being 81 feet agl, which is substantially above the desired level. Additionally, the threshold speed was well above the target at 162 knots, indicating a potential for a hard landing. However, the touchdown speed of 152 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -106 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting a controlled descent.
Despite the smooth touchdown, the aircraft's touchdown point was 732 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a potential for a longer-than-expected landing roll. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.5 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the extended landing roll.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, which may have played a role in the aircraft's performance. The total landing distance of 3,127 meters was 104% of the runway length, indicating a relatively long landing roll. Moreover, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 88.1 meters from the centerline, which could have compromised the aircraft's ability to maintain a stable alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the aircraft demonstrated some positive aspects of the landing, such as a smooth touchdown rate and acceptable touchdown speed, the significant deviations from the target threshold height and speed, as well as the extended landing roll and misaligned rollout, suggest areas for improvement in the pilot's technique and aircraft performance.
