Track the centreline
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 1,000 ft gate: centreline 7.2° off, against a 1° limit.
At the 500 ft gate: centreline 1.5° off, against a 1° limit, wings 10° of bank, against a 10° limit and speed 20 kt FAST on the reference speed of 135 kt.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,284 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 632 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777F taxied to runway 05R at NZAA Auckland International Airport and began the departure roll. The aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 153 kt, using a take-off distance of 2,220 m, which represented 68 % of the available runway. Ambient conditions were 15 °C with a wind from 345° at 4 kt, providing a 4 kt cross-wind and no head-wind component.
After liftoff, the climb commenced one mile east of the airport. In a one-minute interval the airplane rose from 984 ft asl to 1,496 ft asl, gaining 512 ft while covering 4 nm.
The level cruise segment began two miles west of Takanini. During the three-minute cruise the aircraft travelled 8 nm at the assigned altitude.
Descent started six miles south-west of NZAA. Over two minutes the flight descended from 1,567 ft asl to 652 ft asl, a loss of 915 ft, and covered a distance of 4 nm.
On final approach to runway 05R the aircraft reduced altitude from 1,393 ft agl to 60 ft agl in 92 seconds, meeting the required stabilisation gates.
Landing was executed on runway 05R, whose total length is 3,284 m. The threshold speed was slightly above target at 147 kt. Touchdown occurred 218 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 135 kt, a rate of minus 143 fpm, and a very good alignment. The total landing distance measured 1,120 m, equivalent to 34 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was offset by 8.0 m from the centreline.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in two minutes, covering less than one nautical mile.
In total the flight covered 23 nm, required approximately 10 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 1,213 kg of fuel.
The approach to runway 05R at NZAA Auckland International Airport was assessed as unstable at the 1,000 ft gate, with the aircraft off the centreline. The final approach descended from 1,393 ft agl to 60 ft agl in 92 seconds and was scored on the stabilisation gates.
At threshold the height was good and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 147 kt. The aircraft continued the descent profile established on final approach and prepared for flare.
Touchdown occurred 218 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 135 kt, described as a little fast. The vertical rate was smooth at minus 143 fpm and runway-touchdown alignment was very good.
Rollout used 1,120 m of runway, representing 34 % of the available length. Alignment during rollout was slightly misaligned by 8.0 m from the centreline.
To improve the score, focus on maintaining centreline alignment during the final approach to avoid the unstable gate assessment, and refine speed and flare timing to achieve a touchdown point within the designated zone. These adjustments will tighten the approach profile and reduce the overshoot distance.
