Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,972 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,972 m of the 2,127 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 355 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a British Aerospace 146-300, then departed from runway 21 at ESNQ Kiruna Airport. The takeoff distance was 819 meters, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 129 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 8 knots at 229 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 8 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead ESNQ Kiruna Airport. The climb took 18 minutes and covered 101 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 2,504 feet above sea level to 32,779 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,275 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 65 minutes and covered 479 nautical miles. This phase began 10 miles south-west of Lyngseidet in Norway. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, which began 29 miles south-east of ENSA Svea Airport in Norway. The descent took 11 minutes and covered 53 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 32,764 feet above sea level to 1,805 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,959 feet.
The final approach to runway 28 at ENSB Svalbard Airport, Longyear, was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 285.0 degrees at 3 nautical miles and 1,708 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 97 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -111 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 68.5 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 1 knot at 270 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 1 knot. The total landing distance was 1,863 meters, which accounted for 88% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 73.4 meters from the centreline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took approximately 3 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 639 nautical miles, which was covered in 105 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 3,452 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The British Aerospace 146-300 aircraft successfully landed at ENSB Svalbard Airport, Longyear, with a score of 73.2%. The final approach to runway 28 was initiated from the east, heading 285.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,708 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 104 knots. The touchdown distance was within acceptable limits at 340 meters, and the touchdown speed was 97 knots, which is also considered good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -111 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a controlled descent.
However, there were some issues with the alignment of the aircraft during the landing. The runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 68.5 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C, a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°, and a crosswind of 0 knots. The headwind was 1 knot, which may have contributed to the misalignment.
The total landing distance was 1,863 meters, which is 88% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, but it may be due to the aircraft's weight and the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 73.4 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a loss of directional control during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some issues with alignment that need to be addressed. The pilots may need to review their approach and landing procedures to ensure that they are able to maintain a more accurate alignment with the runway centerline.
