Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,053 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 547 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, then departed from runway 20L at Santos Dumont Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,013 meters, which accounted for 77% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 22°C and winds of 8 knots at 200°. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 7 knots. After departure, the enroute climb started 1 mile south east of Rio de Janeiro, where the aircraft climbed from 832 feet above sea level to 6,460 feet above sea level, an increase of 5,628 feet in 3 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 6 miles south east of Ipanema Lake, lasting 8 minutes and covering 31 nautical miles. Following the cruise, the enroute descent started 2 miles north east of Queimados, where the aircraft descended from 6,052 feet above sea level to 1,296 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,757 feet in 4 minutes, covering 13 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 15 at Rio Galeão – Tom Jobim International Airport was made from the north west, heading 126.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,267 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 15, which had a length of 3,053 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 127 knots.
The touchdown point was 110 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 119 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -208 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.2 meters from the centreline. Local weather conditions during landing included a temperature of 20°C and winds of 6 knots at 160°, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,359 meters, accounting for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking from the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 60 nautical miles, taking 28 minutes, and the aircraft used 801 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at SBGL Rio Galeão – Tom Jobim International Airport, achieving a score of 97.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north-west, heading 126.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,267 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with good control, and the aircraft landed on runway 15, which has a length of 3,053 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 127 knots. This minor deviation from the target speed did not significantly impact the landing. The touchdown point was 110 meters beyond the touchdown zone, indicating that the aircraft touched down slightly further down the runway than intended. The touchdown speed of 119 knots was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -208 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.2 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a minor deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach. However, the local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a gentle wind of 6 knots at 160°. The crosswind was minimal at 3 knots, and the headwind was 5 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing.
The total landing distance was 1,359 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the landing. The runway rollout alignment was very good, showing that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop in a straight line.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was well-controlled throughout the final approach and landing. The minor deviations from the target speed and touchdown point were not significant enough to impact the overall score, and the favorable weather conditions contributed to a smooth and safe landing.
