Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,817 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,817 m of the 2,739 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 722 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 taxied from the parking area to the departure runway, a movement that required 64 minutes and covered 11 nm.
The aircraft departed KDEN on runway 17L, applying a take-off roll of 2,547 m which represented 70 % of the available runway. Liftoff was achieved at 156 kt. Ambient conditions were 22 °C with a wind of 10 kt from 10°, a 2-kt crosswind component and a 10-kt tailwind.
Climb commenced 3 nm southeast of KDEN, with the airplane accelerating from 6,461 ft asl to 38,750 ft asl, an altitude gain of 32,289 ft attained in 19 minutes while covering 136 nm.
The first cruise segment began 6 nm northwest of Bellamy Farm Airport (27KS) and persisted for 98 minutes, during which 746 nm were flown.
Descent started 2 nm south of Lawrence Co Courtland (9A4), descending from 39,003 ft asl to 15,229 ft asl, a loss of 23,774 ft over 17 minutes and a distance of 109 nm.
A brief cruise phase originated 4 nm south of Dawson Field (53GA) near Rome, lasting 2 minutes and spanning 8 nm.
The next descent was initiated overhead Aragon, reducing altitude from 14,983 ft asl to 7,434 ft asl, a decrease of 7,549 ft achieved in 8 minutes while covering 41 nm.
A short cruise followed, beginning 1 nm northwest of Beck Field (GA92) at Fayetteville, lasting 6 minutes and encompassing 27 nm.
The final descent began 2 nm east of Pinetree Heliport (8GA0) at Cumming, dropping from 7,073 ft asl to 2,241 ft asl, a loss of 4,832 ft in 3 minutes over 12 nm.
During the final approach to runway 28 at KATL, the aircraft aligned from the east, tracking a heading of 270.0° at 4 nm and 1,227 ft agl.
A go-around was executed on runway 28 at KATL when the aircraft reached 91 ft agl, prompting a climb back to circuit altitude before a subsequent approach.
Landing on runway 28 at KATL was performed on a runway 2,739 m long with a good threshold height; the threshold speed was slightly above target at 144 kt. Touchdown occurred 313 m beyond the touchdown zone at 132 kt, with a smooth touchdown rate of minus 108 fpm and a lateral deviation of 3.3 m from the centreline. Weather at the time was 31 °C with a wind of 10 kt from 130°, a 6-kt crosswind component and a 7-kt tailwind. The total landing distance measured 1,743 m, representing 64 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was reported as very good, with the aircraft remaining on the centreline during deceleration.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 16 minutes, traversing a distance of 3 nm.
In total, the flight covered 1,150 nm, required 205 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 900 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 received a final score of 98.6 % after a final approach to runway 28 at KATL Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from the east, flying a heading of 270.0° at 4 nm and 1,227 ft agl. The approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits.
At threshold the aircraft maintained a speed slightly above target at 144 kt and the threshold height was good. Local weather was 31 °C with wind 10 kt from 130°, a 6 kt crosswind component and a 7 kt tailwind component.
Touchdown occurred 313 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 132 kt that was good and a smooth touchdown rate of minus 108 fpm. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.3 m from the centreline.
The total landing distance was 1,743 m, representing 64 % of the runway length, and the runway rollout alignment was very good.
To tighten performance, aim to achieve the target threshold speed rather than the slightly higher 144 kt, and refine lateral control to reduce the 3.3 m centreline offset at touchdown.
