Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,651 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 88 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 22 at LFLP Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont Blanc Airport. The takeoff distance was 418 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 69 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it started its enroute climb overhead Poisy, located in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France. The climb began at an altitude of 2,143 feet above sea level and increased to 3,804 feet, a total increase of 1,661 feet, over a distance of 4 nautical miles in 4 minutes.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Sales and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent overhead Ruffieux, descending from 4,021 feet to 1,891 feet, a total decrease of 2,130 feet, over a distance of 8 nautical miles in 5 minutes.
The final approach to runway 18 at LFLB Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport was made from the north, with a heading of 175.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,120 feet above ground level, and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was executed on runway 18, which had a length of 1,651 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 83 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 88 meters, and the touchdown speed was excessively fast at 80 knots. However, the touchdown rate was excellent at -99 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also very good after the landing.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 24 nautical miles, and the total flight time was 22 minutes. The aircraft used 6 kilograms of fuel during the flight. The local temperature during the flight was 15°C at the departure airport and 16°C at the arrival airport.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at LFLB Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport, with a score of 89.5%. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 175.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,120 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft successfully touched down on runway 18, which has a length of 1,651 meters.
Upon evaluation, the threshold height was deemed good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was excessively high at 83 knots, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to slow down more effectively before touchdown. The touchdown distance of 88 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to land smoothly and maintain control.
Despite the good touchdown distance, the touchdown speed of 80 knots was excessively fast, which may have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and potentially increased the risk of damage. On the other hand, the touchdown rate of -99 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down smoothly and maintain control.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot was able to maintain a stable and controlled approach. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, which may have affected the aircraft's performance.
The total landing distance of 690 meters was 42% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to land efficiently and maintain control. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot was able to maintain a stable and controlled rollout after touchdown. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft scoring 89.5% and demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and landing phases.
