Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,193 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,193 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 131 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 08 at EHTE Teuge Airport, where the DA40-XLS aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 230 meters, which accounted for 19% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 67 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and a slight tailwind.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it began its enroute climb overhead Twello, a location in the Provincie Gelderland, The Netherlands. The climb started at an altitude of 452 feet above sea level and reached a height of 94 feet above sea level, resulting in an increase of 358 feet in just 2 minutes, while covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The final approach to runway 26 at EHTE Teuge Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 265.0 degrees at an altitude of 80 feet above ground level and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was executed with a threshold speed of 55 knots, which was well below the target speed, requiring the pilot to exercise caution to avoid stalling.
The touchdown distance was 130 meters, and the touchdown speed was 47 knots, both of which were considered good. The touchdown rate was an excellent -61 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from 269 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and a slight headwind.
The total landing distance was 450 meters, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. The total flight distance was 2 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 3 minutes, during which the aircraft used 41 kilograms of fuel.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed at EHTE Teuge Airport, achieving a high score of 97.2%. The final approach was conducted from the east, heading 265.0°, at an altitude of 80 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft maintained a steady descent, ensuring a good threshold height.
Upon reaching the runway threshold, the pilot maintained a speed of 55 knots, which was well below the target speed. This was a prudent decision, as it helped to prevent stalling and ensured a smooth touchdown. The touchdown distance of 130 meters was also satisfactory, indicating a well-executed approach.
The touchdown speed of 47 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -61 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, demonstrating a high degree of control and precision. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had maintained a steady course and had not deviated from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle headwind of 1 knot from 269°. The crosswind component was negligible, at 0 knots. These conditions contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance of 450 meters was 38% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot had maintained a high degree of control and had not over-extended the approach. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot had maintained a steady course and had not deviated from the centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, and the pilot's decision to maintain a low speed and a steady course paid off, resulting in a smooth and safe touchdown.
