Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,500 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,076 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a PA34T Seneca V, then departed from runway 05 at KSFZ North Central State Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,407 feet, which accounted for 28% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 95 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 31°F and winds of 5 knots at 251°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of KSFZ, and climbed from 1,134 feet above sea level to 7,003 feet above sea level, an increase of 5,868 feet, in 6 minutes and covering 13 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead KPVD Theodore Francis Green State Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island, and lasted for 179 minutes, covering 468 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting overhead 00NC North Raleigh Airport in Louisburg, North Carolina, and descended from 7,526 feet above sea level to 3,449 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,077 feet, in 4 minutes and covering 11 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 2 miles southwest of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and lasted for 6 minutes, covering 16 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 1 mile south of Cary, North Carolina, and descended from 2,730 feet above sea level to 901 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,829 feet, in 3 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05R at KRDU Raleigh Durham International Airport was made from the southwest, heading 45.0°, at 1 nautical mile and 489 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,070 feet, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 76 knots was slightly above the target speed, and the touchdown rate was perfect at -9 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 11 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 39°F and winds of 3 knots at 49°. The crosswind component was 0 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 3,934 feet, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 517 nautical miles, which was covered in 205 minutes, and the aircraft used 513 pounds of fuel.
The PA34T Seneca V aircraft successfully landed at KRDU Raleigh Durham International Airport, achieving a score of 98.0%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 45.0° at 1 nautical mile and 489 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 05R, which has a length of 7,500 feet.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 85 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 1,070 feet was within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 76 knots was a bit faster than ideal, but the touchdown rate of -9 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 11 feet from the centerline, which may require some adjustments in the approach and landing technique. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 39°F and a gentle headwind of 3 knots at 49°. There was no crosswind, which made the landing even more manageable.
The total landing distance of 3,934 feet was 52% of the runway length, which is a reasonable figure considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control and stability during the landing roll. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and judgment in navigating the aircraft to a safe touchdown.
