Track the centreline
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 1,000 ft gate: centreline 3.5° off, against a 1° limit and wings 10° of bank, against a 10° limit.
At the 500 ft gate: centreline 1.2° off, against a 1° limit.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,284 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 649 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777F departed NZAA Auckland International Airport from runway 05R, achieving liftoff after a takeoff roll of 920 m, which represented 28 % of the available runway. The aircraft rotated to a liftoff speed of 161 kt while the ambient temperature was 35 °C, wind was 3 kt from 1°, with a 3 kt cross-wind component and a 1 kt head-wind component.
Climb commenced overhead the departure airport, with the airplane ascending from 998 ft asl to 1,537 ft asl, a gain of 539 ft achieved in 1 minute while covering 2 nm.
Level cruise began approximately 1 mile south-west of Wiri and continued for 3 minutes, during which the aircraft traversed 10 nm at a steady altitude.
Descent was initiated 6 miles south-west of NZAA, descending from 1,589 ft asl to 837 ft asl, a loss of 752 ft over 2 minutes and a distance of 5 nm.
On final approach to runway 05R, the aircraft reduced altitude from 938 ft agl to 47 ft agl in 96 seconds, meeting the stabilisation gate criteria.
Landing occurred on runway 05R, whose length is 3,284 m. The threshold speed was recorded at 135 kt, and touchdown was made 228 m beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 119 kt. The vertical speed at touchdown was smooth at minus 123 fpm, and runway alignment was very good. Local weather at the time was 32 °C with wind 5 kt from 1°, a 5 kt cross-wind and a 2 kt head-wind. The total landing distance measured 1,122 m, representing 34 % of the runway.
Rollout proceeded with the aircraft remaining well aligned on the runway, confirming a very good runway-touchdown alignment throughout the deceleration phase.
In total, the flight covered 22 nm, required approximately 8 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 25,635 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 777F approached runway 05R at NZAA Auckland International Airport with an unstable assessment at the 1,000 ft gate, being off the centreline, and completed the descent from 938 ft agl to 47 ft agl in 96 seconds while scoring on the stabilisation gates.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft maintained a good threshold height and a good threshold speed of 135 kt, with ambient temperature 32 °C, wind 5 kt from 001°, a 5 kt cross-wind component and a 2 kt head-wind component.
Touchdown occurred 228 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a good touchdown speed of 119 kt, a smooth vertical rate of minus 123 fpm, and very good runway-touchdown alignment.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,122 m, representing 34 % of the 3,284 m runway, and runway-rollout alignment was very good.
To refine future performances, focus on maintaining centreline alignment during the final approach to achieve a stable gate assessment, and adjust the aim point to land within the touchdown zone rather than beyond it.
