Flight Score
Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,484 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 597 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft in this flight was an MD-82. The pre-flight preparations began with taxiing from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than a nautical mile. The departure roll from runway 18 at EVRA Riga International Airport was then successful, with the takeoff distance covering 57% of the runway. The liftoff speed was reached at 184 kt.
The plane then began its enroute climb, taking off 1 mile south of the airport, and rising from an altitude of 1,032 ft to 19,548 ft in just 7 minutes, covering 33 nm. The climb was completed in a steady manner.
The enroute level cruise followed, beginning 4 miles east of Mersrags in Latvia and continued for 25 minutes, spanning over 165 nm. This smooth cruise provided necessary stability and efficiency for the flight.
As the plane approached its destination, an enroute descent started approximately 22 miles east of Djuroe in Sweden, where the aircraft descended from 19,354 ft to 9,369 ft in just 5 minutes, covering 34 nm. This controlled descent ensured a safe and steady rate of descent.
Later, another enroute cruise began 4 miles southwest of Bergshamra, lasting only 2 minutes and covering a short distance of 8 nm before another descent started. This time, the aircraft descended from 9,369 ft to 1,512 ft in 8 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nm.
The final approach then commenced from the north at 4 nm and 1,396 ft above ground level, heading 194.0 °. The conditions for landing were then met, and the plane touched down on runway 19L at ESSA Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, which has a length of 2,484 m.
Initially, the landing was successful, and the touchdown point was 153 m beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed, however, was slightly fast at 129 kt, while the touchdown rate was good at -153 fpm. Due to various wind conditions, the runway alignment was not entirely accurate, being slightly misaligned by 5.4 m from the centerline.
The post-flight procedures involved taxiing to the parking from the runway, which took approximately 19 minutes and covered less than a nautical mile. The total landing distance was 1,262 m, or 51% of the runway. Runway rollout alignment was found to be very good, with minimal deviations from the expected path.
Throughout the flight, the aircraft utilized 3,091 kg of fuel and traveled a total distance of 257 nm, taking approximately 58 minutes to complete. Various weather conditions were encountered with temperatures ranging from 16 °C to 22 °C and wind speeds varying from 14 kt to 21 kt, which was taken into consideration throughout the flight.
The aircraft, an MD-82, successfully landed on runway 19L at ESSA Stockholm-Arlanda Airport with a score of 95.2%. The final approach to the runway was initiated from the north, heading 194.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,396 feet above ground level.
The pilot's performance during the landing was generally commendable, but there were several areas for improvement. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was too high at 144 knots. Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 153 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 129 knots was slightly fast, indicating that the pilot could have managed the approach more efficiently.
Despite some minor issues, the pilot demonstrated good control over the aircraft during the landing. The touchdown rate was an impressive -153 feet per minute, showcasing the pilot's ability to execute a smooth and controlled descent. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was only slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain a relatively good alignment with the runway.
The local weather conditions were favorable for the landing, with a temperature of 16°C and a gentle headwind of 12 knots. The wind conditions did pose some challenges, with a crosswind of 7 knots and a tailwind component of 2 knots (calculated by subtracting the headwind from the wind speed). However, the pilot was able to manage these conditions effectively, demonstrating good airmanship skills.
The total landing distance was 1,262 meters, accounting for 51% of the runway length. This is a relatively average landing distance, considering the MD-82's performance and the wind conditions. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the post-landing rollout phase.
Overall, while there were some minor areas for improvement, the pilot demonstrated a good level of skill and judgment during the landing. The landing was successful, and the aircraft touched down safely on the runway.
