Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,543 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,543 m of the 2,735 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 311 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, Vueling's EC-MGZ, then departed from runway 06R at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,280 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 151 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 20 knots at an angle of 80 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 19 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile east of the airport, rising from an altitude of 1,028 feet above sea level to 36,041 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,013 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 73 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 12 miles southeast of LEDT Deltebre Airport, lasting 36 minutes and covering 235 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its first descent, which started 2 miles east of La Iruela, Spain, and lasted 5 minutes, covering 35 nautical miles. The descent was from 35,879 feet above sea level to 28,296 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,583 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 4 miles northwest of Pinar, Spain, and lasted 2 minutes, covering 10 nautical miles. The next descent started 3 miles east of Colomera, Spain, and lasted 3 minutes, covering 23 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from 27,868 feet above sea level to 20,206 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,663 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile west of Agron, Spain, and lasted 3 minutes, covering 19 nautical miles. The next descent started 2 miles south of Algarrobo, Spain, and lasted 12 minutes, covering 42 nautical miles. The next descent started 5 miles north of Ardales, Spain, and lasted 5 minutes, covering 18 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from 6,359 feet above sea level to 1,331 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,028 feet.
The final approach to runway 12 at LEMG Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport was made from the northwest, heading 118.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,282 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 12 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 313 meters and a touchdown speed of 134 knots. The touchdown rate was also good at -191 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at an angle of 270 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,460 meters, which accounted for 53% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 476 nautical miles, taking
Aircraft Vueling EC-MGZ successfully landed at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, achieving a high score of 99.3%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north-west, heading 118.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,282 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, ensuring a good threshold height and speed of 140 knots upon touchdown.
Upon landing, the aircraft demonstrated a good touchdown distance of 313 meters, with a corresponding touchdown speed of 134 knots. The touchdown rate was also satisfactory at -191 feet per minute (fpm). However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft being 3.5 meters off-centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 11°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the tailwind component was 3 knots. These conditions contributed to a smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 1,460 meters was within the acceptable range, accounting for 53% of the runway length. Notably, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control and stability during the landing roll. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and skill, resulting in a high score for the Vueling aircraft EC-MGZ.
