Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: gear still up, no landing flap set and speed above the reference speed.
At the 500 ft gate: no landing flap set and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,876 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,876 m of the 2,649 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 764 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport, the Vision Jet began its journey with a taxiing phase that lasted 7 minutes and covered 2 nautical miles. Upon reaching the runway, the aircraft initiated its departure roll on runway 10, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 98 knots. The takeoff distance of 830 meters accounted for 53% of the available runway length. Local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 12°C, with a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 346°, resulting in a crosswind component of 7 knots and a tailwind component of 3 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute altitude, it began its ascent from 2,050 feet above sea level to 19,073 feet, an increase of 17,023 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 48 nautical miles. The climb phase concluded overhead King Airport Sevierville, marking the beginning of the enroute level cruise. This phase lasted 12 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 72 nautical miles, maintaining a steady altitude. The enroute descent phase commenced 1 mile southwest of Lowell, North Carolina, and lasted 7 minutes, with the aircraft descending from 19,226 feet to 2,019 feet, a decrease of 17,206 feet, covering a distance of 31 nautical miles.
Upon reaching the final approach phase, the Vision Jet began its descent towards runway 36R at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, approaching from the south at a heading of 356.0°. The aircraft touched down 430 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 110 knots, which was excessively fast. However, the touchdown rate of -150 feet per minute was within acceptable limits. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also satisfactory. The total landing distance of 1,878 meters accounted for 71% of the available runway length. Following a taxiing phase that lasted 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile, the aircraft arrived at the parking area, having completed a total flight distance of 160 nautical miles, using 153 kilograms of fuel in the process, and taking a total of 41 minutes to complete the journey.
The Vision Jet touched down on runway 36R at KCLT Charlotte Douglas International Airport, showcasing a good threshold height. However, the threshold speed was excessively high at 134 kt, indicating a potential for a longer landing roll. The aircraft's descent was well-managed, with a touchdown speed of 110 kt, which was also excessively fast. Despite this, the touchdown rate of -150 fpm was good, indicating a controlled descent.
The aircraft's alignment during touchdown was very good, with the runway touchdown alignment being spot on. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a 22 kt headwind, contributed to the aircraft's performance. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, allowing the pilot to maintain a stable approach. The touchdown point was 430 m beyond the touchdown zone, which, although not ideal, was not excessively far off.
The Vision Jet's rollout was smooth, with the aircraft maintaining very good alignment along the runway. The total landing distance of 1,878 m was 71% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. Overall, the landing performance scored 83.7%, with room for improvement in terms of threshold speed and touchdown speed.
