Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,984 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,408 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT). This process took approximately 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 18L, with the aircraft taking off after covering 52 feet, which accounted for 1% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was recorded at 162 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of KCLT, it began its enroute climb 1 mile southeast of the airport, rising from an altitude of 1,623 feet above sea level to 23,407 feet above sea level. This increase of 21,784 feet was achieved in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 65 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 1 mile north of O Neal Field Greer (20SC) in South Carolina and lasted for 10 minutes, covering a distance of 80 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 3 miles northwest of Maysville, Georgia, and involved a decrease in altitude from 24,003 feet above sea level to 2,244 feet above sea level. This decrease of 21,759 feet was achieved in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 60 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 08L at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 90 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,219 feet above ground level.
The landing took place on runway 08L, which had a length of 8,984 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was recorded at 138 knots. The touchdown point was 1,043 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 127 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -142 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 49 feet.
The total landing distance was 4,626 feet, accounting for 51% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centreline by 49 feet. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 9 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 212 nautical miles, taking 57 minutes, and the aircraft used 5,144 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 08L at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) with a score of 89.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,219 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 138 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing. The touchdown point was located 1,043 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 127 knots, which is also within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was smooth at -142 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a controlled descent.
However, there were some minor issues with the landing. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 49 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 49 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to a similar deviation during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 75°F. The total landing distance was 4,626 feet, which is 51% of the runway length. Overall, the landing was considered good, but there is room for improvement in terms of alignment and alignment during the rollout phase.
