Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 9,009 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 9,009 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 4,550 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Chicago O'Hare International Airport, the Boeing B737-800 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. As the aircraft lined up on runway 10L, the crew initiated the departure roll, and the aircraft lifted off the ground after a takeoff distance of 5,249 feet, which represented 40% of the available runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 281°.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute cruise altitude, it passed overhead Schiller Park, Illinois, and continued to ascend to 34,999 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,316 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 124 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase started 4 miles north of Lake Holiday, Indiana, and lasted for 43 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 343 nautical miles. The descent phase began 3 miles west of Weaverville, North Carolina, and the aircraft descended from 34,996 feet to 4,061 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,936 feet in 16 minutes, covering 93 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 36L at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was initiated from the south, and the aircraft landed on the runway after a total landing distance of 10,212 feet, which was 113% of the available runway length.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 74°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 68°. The touchdown speed was 148 knots, which was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was fair at -226 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, but the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 64 feet from the centerline. The total flight distance was 582 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 97 minutes, during which the aircraft used 9,531 pounds of fuel. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The Boeing B737-800 touched down on runway 36L at KCLT Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a 9,009-foot-long runway, after a final approach from the south. The aircraft's descent was characterized by a good threshold height, allowing the crew to maintain a controlled approach. The threshold speed of 146 knots was also within acceptable limits, indicating a well-executed approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed of 148 knots was slightly above the recommended value, resulting in a touchdown rate of -226 feet per minute, which was fair. However, the touchdown point was located beyond the midpoint of the runway, utilizing more than 50% of the available length. This may have been due to the aircraft's speed at touchdown, which could have been managed more effectively. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway.
The rollout phase was marked by a slight deviation from the centreline, with the aircraft misaligned by 64 feet. The total landing distance of 10,212 feet was 113% of the runway length, indicating a longer-than-ideal rollout. Despite these minor issues, the overall landing quality was satisfactory, earning a score of 71.4%. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 74°F and a light wind of 1 knot from 68°, did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing.
