Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,011 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,794 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a FFX P180, then departed from runway 23 at KSFZ North Central State Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,306 feet, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 117 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 72°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 280°. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead KSFZ North Central State Airport in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The climb took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 57 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,064 feet above sea level to 36,170 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,106 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started 2 miles northwest of KSPP Gardiners Island Landing Field Springs in New York. This cruise phase lasted for 120 minutes and covered a distance of 623 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 3 miles southwest of KCHS Charleston International Airport in Charleston, South Carolina. The descent took 22 minutes and covered a distance of 79 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 37,327 feet above sea level to 2,578 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,748 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which started 2 miles west of KGER Georgetown Airport in Georgetown, Georgia. This cruise phase was brief, lasting only 2 minutes and covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 1 mile northeast of Pooler, Georgia. The descent took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 2,562 feet above sea level to 823 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,739 feet.
The final approach to runway 19 at KSAV Savannah Hilton Head International Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 154.0° at an altitude of 2 nautical miles and 775 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the touchdown point being 402 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 92 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -116 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 81°F and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 6°. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the tailwind component was 7 knots. The total landing distance was 3,269 feet, which accounted for 47% of the runway. The total flight distance was 773 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 174 minutes. The aircraft used 1,782 pounds of fuel during the flight. Taxiing from the runway to the parking area took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The aircraft, identified as FFX P180 03 01, successfully landed at KSAV Savannah Hilton Head International Airport on runway 19. The final approach was initiated from the north, with the aircraft heading 154.0° at an altitude of 775 feet above ground level (agl) and 2 nautical miles from the runway. The pilot demonstrated excellent control and precision, achieving a score of 98.9%.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 402 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly beyond the ideal spot but still within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 92 knots was good, indicating that the pilot had successfully managed the aircraft's descent and speed. The touchdown rate of -116 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting that the pilot had maintained control and avoided any sudden or harsh deceleration.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 81°F and a gentle wind of 7 knots from a direction of 6°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the tailwind component was 7 knots. These conditions would have made the landing relatively straightforward for the pilot.
The total landing distance of 3,269 feet was 47% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and alignment during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated excellent skills and control.
