Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,202 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 198 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LGKO Kos Airport, a process that took just 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 32, with a takeoff distance of 1,204 meters, which was 50% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 154 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 17°C temperature and a wind speed of 13 knots at 299°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 12 knots. The enroute climb began approximately 1 mile northwest of LGKO Kos Airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,466 feet above sea level to 21,618 feet above sea level, an increase of 20,152 feet in just 9 minutes, covering a distance of 44 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 16 miles northeast of Amorgos, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 32 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 6 miles north of Koronos, with the aircraft descending from 21,621 feet above sea level to 1,480 feet above sea level, a decrease of 20,141 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 88 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03L at LGAV Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 36.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,188 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on runway 03L, which had a length of 3,202 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 141 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 198 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 140 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -379 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 13°C temperature and a wind speed of 4 knots at 270°, with a crosswind component of 3 knots and a tailwind component of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,243 meters, which was 39% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 9 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 172 nautical miles, taking 54 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,214 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 03L at LGAV Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, achieving a score of 97.4%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 36.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,188 feet above ground level.
The landing was executed with good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 140 knots, which may have been due to various factors such as wind conditions or pilot judgment. The touchdown distance of 198 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable approach and touchdown.
Despite the good touchdown distance, the touchdown speed of 140 knots was slightly faster than the target speed, which may have resulted in a firmer touchdown rate of -379 feet per minute. This could have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and may have affected the overall landing quality.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.0 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as crosswind or pilot error. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and aligned path during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 13°C and winds of 4 knots at 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, and the tailwind component was 2 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly above-target threshold speed.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with a total landing distance of 1,243 meters, which is 39% of the runway length. The aircraft was able to maintain a stable and aligned path during the rollout phase, and the touchdown speed and distance were within acceptable limits.
