Settle the descent rate
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate 1,565 fpm, more than the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,350 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 361 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A220-300 taxied from the parking area to runway 08R at CYVR Vancouver International Airport in 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
The aircraft commenced its departure roll on runway 08R, using a takeoff distance of 1,354 m 39 % of runway and achieving liftoff at 146 kt; ambient temperature was 25 °C with wind 7 kt from 150°, a 6 kt cross-wind component and a 5 kt head-wind.
Climb began overhead CAM9 Vancouver International Seaplane Base, ascending from 1,013 ft asl to 32,272 ft asl - a gain of 31,259 ft - in 25 minutes while covering 152 nm.
Level cruise started 12 nm east of Oliver, British Columbia, lasting 4 minutes and traversing 28 nm.
A second climb segment started 18 nm north of Grand Forks, raising the aircraft from 33,436 ft asl to 36,686 ft asl - an increase of 3,250 ft - in 6 minutes over 42 nm.
The next cruise phase originated 1 nm south-west of CZNL Nelson Airport, lasting 12 minutes and covering 93 nm.
Climb resumed 1 nm west of Sparwood, lifting the airplane from 37,029 ft asl to 40,087 ft asl - a rise of 3,059 ft - in 2 minutes while moving 13 nm.
Descent commenced 11 nm east of Sparwood, dropping from 40,091 ft asl to 37,026 ft asl - a loss of 3,066 ft - in 2 minutes and covering 12 nm.
Cruise then continued 10 nm north-west of CYYM Cowley Airport, lasting 58 minutes and spanning 478 nm.
A further descent began 7 nm south-west of Moosomin, Saskatchewan, descending from 37,031 ft asl to 17,991 ft asl - a decrease of 19,040 ft - in 7 minutes across 52 nm.
The following cruise segment started 9 nm south-west of Rivers, Manitoba, lasting 11 minutes and covering 71 nm.
Descent resumed 10 nm south-east of CKF6 Macgregor Airport, falling from 17,848 ft asl to 1,926 ft asl - a loss of 15,922 ft - in 12 minutes and covering 52 nm.
Final approach to runway 36 at CYWG Winnipeg / James Armstrong Richardson International Airport was executed from the south, on a heading of 8.0° at 4 nm and 1,140 ft agl.
Landing on runway 36, whose length is 3,355 m, was achieved with a threshold speed of 139 kt; touchdown occurred 366 m down the runway at 137 kt with a vertical rate of minus 220 fpm and a lateral deviation of 7.2 m from the centreline. Local conditions were 22 °C, wind 12 kt from 50°, a cross-wind component of 8 kt and a head-wind component of 9 kt. Total landing distance was 1,361 m, representing 41 % of runway, and rollout alignment was very good.
Runway rollout alignment remained very good throughout the deceleration phase.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 999 nm, lasted 149 minutes, and consumed 5,136 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A220-300 conducted the final approach to runway 36 at CYWG Winnipeg from the south, tracking a heading of 8.0° at 4 NM and 1 140 ft AGL. The approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1 000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits.
During the threshold and flare the aircraft displayed a good threshold height and a good threshold speed of 139 kt. The flare resulted in a good touchdown distance of 366 m and a good touchdown speed of 137 kt, while the touchdown rate was fair at minus 220 fpm. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.2 m from the centreline.
Touchdown occurred 366 m down the runway at 137 kt with a sink rate of minus 220 fpm and a lateral offset of 7.2 m from centreline. The total landing distance was 1 361 m, representing 41 % of the 3 355 m runway length.
Rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft decelerated within the remaining runway distance, completing the rollout safely.
Refine the flare technique to achieve a slightly lower sink rate and improve centreline alignment, while preserving the current approach speed and touchdown point. Maintaining these adjustments will help convert the fair rate and minor offset into consistently excellent landings.
