Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out. These checks are the approach's score.
At the 500 ft gate: centreline 1.6° off, against a 1° limit.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,284 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 300 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777F departed NZAA Auckland International Airport from runway 05R, accelerating over a take-off distance of 906 m which represented 28 % of the runway. Liftoff was achieved at 156 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 34 °C with a wind of 3 kt from 001°, giving a 3 kt cross-wind component and a 1 kt head-wind component.
During the climb the aircraft rose from 969 ft asl to 1 621 ft asl, an altitude gain of 652 ft in one minute while covering 2 nm, the climb beginning directly overhead the departure airport.
Level cruise commenced approximately one mile south-west of Wiri and was maintained for five minutes, during which the airplane travelled 13 nm at cruise altitude.
The descent phase reduced altitude from 827 ft agl to 43 ft agl in 98 seconds as the aircraft prepared for final approach.
On final approach to runway 05R the crew met the stabilisation gate criteria, confirming a properly configured approach path and speed.
Landing was executed on runway 05R, whose total length is 3 284 m. The threshold speed was slightly below the target at 134 kt. Touchdown occurred 302 m down the runway at 129 kt with a firm touchdown rate of minus 310 fpm and perfect alignment. Local weather at landing was a temperature of 20 °C, wind 2 kt from 233°, a 1 kt cross-wind and a 2 kt tail-wind component. The total landing distance recorded was 827 m, representing 25 % of the runway, and rollout alignment was judged very good.
In total the flight covered 21 nm, required 7 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 25,588 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 05R at NZAA Auckland International Airport was completed in 98 seconds, descending from 827 ft agl to 43 ft agl and was scored on the stabilisation gates. Local weather was 20 °C with a wind of 2 kt from 233°, a 1 kt cross-wind component and a 2 kt tail-wind component.
At threshold the aircraft’s speed was slightly below the target at 134 kt, and the flare produced a touchdown distance of 302 m from the runway threshold. Touchdown speed was 129 kt, the rate of descent was firm at minus 310 fpm, and runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The aircraft rolled out over a total landing distance of 827 m, representing 25 % of the 3 284 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was very good.
With a score of 92.5 % the landing was strong overall; aim to achieve the target threshold speed and moderate the flare to reduce the firm touchdown rate for even smoother landings.
