Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,123 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 84 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 20 at LPPT Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon Portela Airport). The Airbus A320 took off with a takeoff distance of 977 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 168 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 230 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb overhead Charneca, located in the Distrito de Lisboa, Portugal. The climb began at an altitude of 1,366 feet above sea level and increased to 1,861 feet above sea level, a rise of 495 feet, over a distance of 3 nautical miles in 2 minutes. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile east of Moscavide e Portela, also located in the Distrito de Lisboa, Portugal. The descent from 1,860 feet above sea level to 805 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,055 feet, was completed over a distance of 2 nautical miles in 2 minutes.
The final approach to runway 20 at LPPT Humberto Delgado Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 202.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile from the runway and at an altitude of 449 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 20 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 110 knots and a distance of 85 meters. The touchdown rate was fair at -278 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 230 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 741 meters, which accounted for 24% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled deceleration of the aircraft after touchdown. The total flight distance was 8 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 5 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6,817 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at LPPT Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon Portela Airport) on runway 20, achieving a high score of 99.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 202.0° at 1 nautical mile and 449 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a steady course, ensuring a smooth final approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a threshold speed of 112 knots being met. The touchdown distance of 85 meters was also within acceptable limits, indicating a controlled and precise landing. The touchdown speed of 110 knots was also satisfactory, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's descent and speed.
However, the touchdown rate of -278 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the pilot could have managed the descent more smoothly. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 14°C and a gentle wind of 6 knots at 230°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing.
The total landing distance of 741 meters was 24% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This indicates that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently, with a very good runway rollout alignment. Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and landing phases.
