Track the centreline
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 1,000 ft gate: centreline 3.1° off, against a 1° limit and wings 21° of bank, against a 10° limit.
At the 500 ft gate: wings 11° of bank, against a 10° limit.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,284 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 206 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777F departed from runway 05R at NZAA Auckland International Airport, accelerating through a take-off roll of 1,076 m, which represented 33 % of the available runway. Liftoff was achieved at 162 kt. Ambient conditions were 34 °C with a wind of 3 kt from 1°, comprising a 3 kt cross-wind component and a 1 kt head-wind component.
During the en-route climb, the aircraft began its ascent overhead NZAA, climbing from 1,027 ft asl to 1,540 ft asl, an altitude gain of 513 ft in 1 minute while covering 3 nm.
Level cruise commenced 2 miles south of Wiri and was maintained for 4 minutes, during which the aircraft travelled 13 nm.
The descent phase started from 1,139 ft agl and proceeded to 48 ft agl in 81 seconds, meeting the stabilisation gate criteria.
On final approach to runway 05R at NZAA, the aircraft aligned for landing under the same weather conditions of 34 °C, 3 kt wind from 1°, with a 3 kt cross-wind and 1 kt head-wind.
Touchdown occurred on runway 05R, whose length is 3,284 m, with a threshold speed of 136 kt, slightly below the target. The aircraft landed 206 m down the runway at 131 kt, with a hard touchdown rate of minus 415 fpm and a lateral deviation of 7.5 m from the centreline.
The flight covered a total distance of 20 nm, taking 7 and used 24,841 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 777F entered the final approach to runway 05R at Auckland International Airport with an unstable assessment at the 1,000 ft gate, being off the centreline. The aircraft descended from 1,139 ft agl to 48 ft agl in 81 seconds and was scored on the stabilisation gates while operating in temperature 34 °C, wind 3 kt from 001°, with a 3 kt cross-wind component and a 1 kt head-wind.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft achieved a good threshold height and a threshold speed slightly below target at 136 kt. Touchdown distance was good at 206 m and touchdown speed was good at 131 kt, but the touchdown rate was hard at minus 415 fpm and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.5 m from the centreline.
The aircraft made ground contact 206 m down the runway at a speed of 131 kt, with a hard vertical rate of minus 415 fpm and a lateral offset of 7.5 m from the centreline, completing the landing without further noted events.
The 81.1 % score reflects overall competence; focus on maintaining centreline alignment during the final approach and refining flare technique to reduce the hard touchdown rate. Improving these two areas will bring the approach and touchdown phases into tighter compliance with target parameters.
