Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,561 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 582 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, then departed from runway 12 at LIPE Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport. The takeoff distance was 779 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were favorable, with a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and no wind. The aircraft then took off and began its enroute climb, which started overhead LIPE Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport. The climb was from an altitude of 1,153 feet above sea level to 24,984 feet above sea level, an increase of 23,831 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 29 nautical miles.
After the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Baiso in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. This phase lasted for 16 minutes and covered a distance of 107 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 1 mile north of Bardineto in Liguria, Italy. The descent was from an altitude of 24,736 feet above sea level to 1,298 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,438 feet in 30 minutes, covering a distance of 56 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 04L at LFMN Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport was from the southwest, heading 45.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,276 feet above ground level. The landing was on runway 04L, which had a length of 2,561 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 136 knots. The touchdown point was 161 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 130 knots. However, the touchdown rate was good at -194 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at the time of departure, with a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind of 2 knots at 70 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,380 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 199 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 64 minutes. The aircraft used 5,666 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft successfully landed at LFMN Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport, achieving a score of 96.2%. The final approach to runway 04L was initiated from the southwest, with a heading of 45.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,276 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 136 kt. The touchdown point was located 161 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 130 kt was a bit faster than desired, but the touchdown rate of -194 feet per minute was considered good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a gentle wind of 2 kt at 70°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 kt, while the headwind component was 2 kt. These conditions likely contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance of 1,380 meters was 54% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was well under control during the landing phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good handling characteristics.
