Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,190 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,190 m of the 3,021 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 785 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-900 taxied from the parking area to runway 05 at CYYZ Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nm.
During the departure roll the aircraft used 2,158 m of runway, representing 65 % of the available length, and lifted off at 174 kt. Ambient conditions were 30 °C with a wind of 28 kt from 349°, providing a 15 kt headwind and a 23 kt cross-wind component.
The initial climb began 1 mile north of CYYZ, climbing from 1,550 ft asl to 30,533 ft asl - an altitude gain of 28,983 ft - in 20 minutes while traversing 118 nm.
Cruise commenced 20 nm west of CYVV Wiarton Airport and continued for 178 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 1,202 nm at level flight.
A second climb segment started 22 nm east of Medicine Hat, raising the aircraft from 31,102 ft asl to 32,666 ft asl, a gain of 1,564 ft, in 2 minutes over a distance of 11 nm.
The subsequent cruise leg began 10 nm east of Medicine Hat and lasted 58 minutes, during which 389 nm were flown at cruise altitude.
Descent was initiated 12 nm north of CYDC Princeton Airport, descending from 32,458 ft asl to 1,349 ft asl - a loss of 31,109 ft - in 24 minutes while covering 109 nm.
For the final approach the aircraft was aligned with runway 26R at CYVR Vancouver International Airport from the east, on a heading of 280.0° at 4 nm and 1,330 ft agl.
Landing on runway 26R was achieved with a threshold speed of 144 kt; the aircraft touched down 373 m beyond the touchdown zone at 140 kt, with a smooth touchdown rate of minus 126 fpm and a lateral deviation of 4.5 m from the centreline. The runway length is 3,021 m; the total landing distance recorded was 2,113 m, equivalent to 70 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was reported as very good, confirming the aircraft remained on the centreline during the deceleration phase.
After exiting the runway, the aircraft taxied to the parking area in 9 minutes, traveling a distance of 1 nm.
In total the flight covered 1,843 nm, required 310 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 14,173 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 26R at CYVR was flown from the east on a heading of 280.0° at 4 nm and 1,294 ft agl, with a temperature of 22 °C, wind 8 kt from 280°, a head-wind component of 8 kt and no cross-wind.
Threshold height was good and the aircraft crossed the threshold at a speed of 144 kt, which was also rated good.
Touchdown occurred 159 m beyond the designated touchdown zone at a speed of 140 kt, described as good, with a smooth vertical rate of minus 126 fpm. The touchdown point was slightly off the centreline by 4.2 m.
The aircraft rolled out over a total landing distance of 1,900 m, representing 68 % of the 2,806 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was very good.
Minor refinement of centreline tracking during the final seconds of flare will tighten the touchdown point alignment while preserving the excellent speed and rate performance already demonstrated.
