Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,996 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 532 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a TBM 850, then departed from runway 36 at KLEB Lebanon Municipal Airport. The takeoff distance was 681 meters, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 99 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 1 knot from 175 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead White River Junction in Vermont, United States. The climb took 6 minutes and covered 19 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,333 feet above sea level to 6,219 feet above sea level, an increase of 4,886 feet.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 2 miles northeast of Springfield, Vermont. This cruise phase lasted 32 minutes and covered 117 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 2 miles southeast of Sherman Field Poughkeepsie in New York, United States. The descent took 2 minutes and covered 6 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 6,252 feet above sea level to 5,449 feet above sea level, a decrease of 803 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 2 miles north of Lake Carmel, New York. This cruise phase lasted 5 minutes and covered 19 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting overhead Scotts Corners, New York. The descent took 6 minutes and covered 11 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 5,071 feet above sea level to 1,650 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,421 feet.
The final approach to runway 16 at KHPN Westchester County Airport was made from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 150.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,205 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 16, which had a length of 1,996 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was too high at 81 knots. The touchdown point was 92 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 68 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -347 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 13.3 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.9 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 7 knots from 220 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 702 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 178 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 59 minutes. The aircraft used -64 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The TBM 850 aircraft successfully landed at KHPN Westchester County Airport, but with some areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the northwest, heading 150.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,205 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 16, which has a length of 1,996 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was too high at 81 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to reduce the touchdown speed. The touchdown point was 92 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which suggests that the pilot may have been able to make a more precise touchdown. The touchdown speed of 68 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was firm at -347 feet per minute (fpm).
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 13.3 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or during the flare. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 26°C and a wind of 7 knots at 220°. The crosswind was 7 knots, and the headwind was 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 702 meters, which is 35% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.9 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the rollout or a failure to maintain alignment.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of reducing the threshold speed and touchdown speed, and maintaining alignment during the rollout.
