Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,076 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,442 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 11 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna 208B, then departed from runway 25L at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX). The takeoff distance was 89 feet, which accounted for 1% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 107 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 66°F and a wind speed of 9 knots at 220°. The crosswind was 6 knots, and the headwind was 7 knots. After departing from KLAX, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting overhead El Segundo, California. The climb took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles, with an increase in altitude from 515 feet above sea level to 2,008 feet above sea level, a total increase of 1,493 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile east of Marina del Rey, California. This phase lasted for 6 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. After the cruise phase, the aircraft began its descent and landing on runway 25L at KLAX. The runway length was 11,076 feet, and the threshold height was well above the target. The threshold speed was good at 68 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 986 feet, and the touchdown speed was 59 knots, which was also good. However, the touchdown rate was very heavy at -828 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 129 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions during landing were a temperature of 65°F and a wind speed of 6 knots at 269°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 3,341 feet, which accounted for 30% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 202 feet from the centreline. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 17 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 11 minutes. The aircraft used 60 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna 208B aircraft successfully landed on runway 25L at KLAX Los Angeles International Airport, achieving a score of 60.9%. The landing was evaluated based on several key parameters, including threshold height, threshold speed, touchdown distance, touchdown speed, and touchdown rate.
The threshold height at 72 ft above ground level (agl) was found to be well above the target, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a safe altitude during the approach. The threshold speed of 68 kt was also considered good, suggesting that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's speed effectively during the landing.
The touchdown distance of 986 ft was within the acceptable range, indicating that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a safe stop within a reasonable distance. The touchdown speed of 59 kt was also good, suggesting that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's speed during the landing. However, the touchdown rate of -828 fpm was considered very heavy, indicating that the aircraft was touching down at a relatively high rate of descent.
One of the areas for improvement was the runway touchdown position, which was excessively misaligned by 129 ft from the centreline. This suggests that the pilot may have been experiencing some difficulty in maintaining a straight course during the landing. The local weather conditions, including a temperature of 65 °F and a wind speed of 6 kt at 269 °, may have contributed to this issue.
The total landing distance of 3,341 ft was 30% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 202 ft from the centreline, indicating that the pilot may have been experiencing some difficulty in maintaining a straight course during the rollout.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a safe stop within a reasonable distance. However, there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of maintaining a straight course during the landing and rollout.
