Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,774 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,774 m of the 3,661 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 773 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-800 taxied from the parking area to runway 15L at KIAH George Bush International, covering 1 nm in 8 minutes.
During the departure roll on runway 15L the aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 156 kt, using a takeoff distance of 1,108 m (30 % of the runway). Ambient temperature was 36 °C with a wind of 18 kt from 170°, providing a 17 kt headwind and a 6 kt crosswind component.
Climb commenced 1 mile south of KIAH, with the airplane rising from 1,065 ft asl to 37,999 ft asl - an increase of 36,935 ft - over 19 minutes while covering 125 nm.
The first cruise segment began overhead 7XS6 Moore Hx Ranch Airport, lasting 69 minutes and traversing 503 nm at level flight.
Descent started 2 miles west of CD03 Tinnes Airport, with altitude decreasing from 38,000 ft asl to 12,410 ft asl - a loss of 25,590 ft - in 20 minutes and a distance of 114 nm.
A brief cruise followed 1 mile north-east of CO42 Circle 8 Ranch Airport, lasting 2 minutes and covering 6 nm.
The next descent began 1 mile north-east of 43CO Kostroski Airport, dropping from 11,950 ft asl to 6,724 ft asl - a reduction of 5,226 ft - in 6 minutes over 25 nm.
Final approach to runway 34R at KDEN Denver International Airport was executed from the south, on a heading of 1.0° at 4 nm and 1,353 ft agl.
Landing on runway 34R, which is 3,665 m long, occurred with a threshold speed of 152 kt. Touchdown was 370 m beyond the touchdown zone at 140 kt, with a touchdown rate of minus 290 fpm and a lateral deviation of 4.7 m from the centreline. The total landing distance was 1,707 m (47 % of the runway) and the rollout alignment was very good; local temperature was 31 °C.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area, covering 2 nm in 9 minutes.
In total the flight covered 783 nm, required 134 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 4,478 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 34R at KDEN was flown from the south on a heading of 1.0° at 4 nm and 1,353 ft agl.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft maintained a good threshold height, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 152 kt.
Touchdown occurred 370 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 140 kt that was too fast; the vertical rate was fair at minus 290 fpm and the touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 4.7 m from the centreline.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,707 m, representing 47 % of the 3,665 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was very good.
Reduce the approach and threshold speed to bring the aircraft within the target speed envelope, and aim to arrest the aircraft within the touchdown zone to avoid the 370 m overshoot; maintaining these adjustments will tighten alignment and further improve the already strong score of 89.4 %.
