Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,494 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 340 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
This flight was operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft. The takeoff from Zürich Airport (LSZH) was uneventful, taking approximately 8 minutes to taxi from the parking area to the runway, a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed runway 34, taking off on a takeoff distance that covered 50% of the runway, with a length of 1,616 meters. The aircraft lifted off at a liftoff speed of 159 knots, with local weather conditions consisting of a temperature of 16°C, a wind speed of 3 knots, and a wind direction of 339°.
En route, the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 2,426 feet above sea level to 31,369 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,943 feet over a distance of 81 nautical miles, within 16 minutes. The climb commenced overhead Oberglatt in the Kanton Zurich region of Switzerland. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, where it flew at a constant altitude, lasting 26 minutes and covering a distance of 221 nautical miles. The level cruise phase started overhead Stanzach in the Tirol region of Austria.
As the aircraft neared its destination, it began its descent, initiating a descent from an altitude of 31,461 feet above sea level to 1,119 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,342 feet over a distance of 50 nautical miles, within 14 minutes. The descent commenced overhead Rohrbach an der Lafnitz in the Steiermark region of Austria. Following the descent, the aircraft commenced its final approach to runway 29 at Vienna International Airport (LOWW), entering from the southeast, at an altitude of 520 feet above ground level and a distance of 2 nautical miles from the threshold.
The landing on runway 29 at Vienna International Airport was conducted with good runway touchdown alignment, landing at a speed of 127 knots and a touch down distance of 340 meters. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -213 feet per minute. The aircraft then rolled out, maintaining perfect alignment with the runway, despite being affected by local weather conditions, which included a temperature of 18°C, a wind speed of 10 knots, and a wind direction of 279°. The total landing distance covered 35% of the runway, with a length of 1,222 meters.
Upon completing the landing, the aircraft taxied back to the parking area, taking approximately 5 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile. The flight was successful, having utilized 2,742 kilograms of fuel over a total distance of 359 nautical miles. This took a total of 67 minutes to complete.
The Airbus A320 has successfully completed a landing at LOWW Vienna International Airport, with a final approach score of 99.8%. The aircraft was approaching the airport from the south east, aligned with a heading of 295.0° at a distance of 2 nautical miles (nm) above ground level (agl). The aircraft was at an altitude of 520 ft agl when initiating the final approach to runway 29.
The landing was completed on the runway, with a favorable threshold height and an optimal threshold speed of 131 kt. The touchdown distance was also within the acceptable range, totaling 340 meters. However, a minor deviation was observed in the touchdown speed, which reached 127 kt, slightly exceeding the recommended value. The touchdown rate of -213 fpm (feet per minute) was also slightly less than ideal, but still considered fair.
The local weather conditions during the landing included a temperature of 18°C and wind speeds of 10 kt at a direction of 279°. The crosswind effect was minimal, at 3 kt, while the headwind component was 10 kt. As a result, the aircraft's performance was not severely impacted by the wind conditions.
The total landing distance of 1,222 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway length, was well within the acceptable range. Notably, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the aircraft maintained perfect alignment during the rollout phase. This indicates that the pilots had excellent control of the aircraft and executed the landing with precision and skill.
In summary, the Airbus A320's landing at LOWW Vienna International Airport was a success, with a high score and several indicators pointing to a well-executed maneuver. While there were some minor deviations in terms of touchdown speed and rate, the overall performance was impressive, and the aircraft demonstrated its ability to operate smoothly and safely in challenging conditions.
