Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,480 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 908 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 22 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 03L at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, with a takeoff distance of 4,597 feet, which was 54% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions, with a temperature of 47°F and a wind speed of 20 knots at 309°. The crosswind component was 19 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 2 miles west of Taylor, Michigan, and climbing from an altitude of 1,662 feet above sea level to 31,728 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,066 feet, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 104 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles northwest of Chippewa Park, Ohio, and lasted for 70 minutes, covering a distance of 508 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, starting 2 miles north of Plains, Georgia, and climbing from 32,456 feet above sea level to 35,040 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,585 feet, in 3 minutes and covering a distance of 25 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 3 miles west of the 52GA Rabbit Hole Heliport in Atlanta, Georgia, and lasted for 25 minutes, covering a distance of 301 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 4 miles southeast of FA27 Ellsworth Field in Arcadia, Florida, and descending from 35,788 feet above sea level to 1,404 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,384 feet, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 109 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08R at Miami International Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 87.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,386 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 08R, which had a length of 10,480 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 137 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 908 feet, and the touchdown speed was 134 knots, which was also good.
However, the touchdown rate was fair at -265 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 11 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 80°F and a wind speed of 9 knots at 163°, with a crosswind component of 9 knots and a headwind component of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 3,359 feet, which was 32% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took only 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,057 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 148 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 17,718 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at Miami International Airport (KMIA) on runway 08R, achieving a score of 99.5%. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 87.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,386 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the pilots maintained a suitable altitude prior to touchdown.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 137 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 908 feet was also deemed good, indicating that the pilots managed to slow down the aircraft effectively. However, the touchdown speed of 134 knots was slightly lower than the threshold speed, which may have contributed to a fair touchdown rate of -265 feet per minute (fpm). A fair touchdown rate suggests that the aircraft touched down with a moderate amount of deceleration, which may have been influenced by the pilots' decision to slow down the aircraft.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 80°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from 163°. This resulted in a crosswind component of 9 knots and a headwind component of 2 knots. Despite the moderate crosswind, the pilots managed to maintain a good runway touchdown position, albeit slightly misaligned by 11 feet from the centerline.
The total landing distance of 3,359 feet was 32% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilots demonstrated good skills and judgment in navigating the aircraft to a safe touchdown.
