Improve the rollout
A crosswind landing is a geometry problem. The air mass you're flying in is moving sideways across the runway, and you need your ground track down the centreline with your wheels aligned to it at the moment of contact. There are two techniques that will help, the crab and the sideslip.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,642 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,642 m of the 2,542 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 179 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A321 then departed from runway 25C at Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH), with a takeoff distance of 930 meters, which accounted for 27% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 29°C temperature and winds of 15 knots at 209 degrees. The crosswind was 10 knots, while the headwind was 11 knots. After departing from Hong Kong, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile west of the airport and rising from 1,066 feet above sea level to 20,809 feet, an increase of 19,743 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 83 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 59 miles south of Shanwei, China, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering 27 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from 21,730 feet to 33,353 feet, an increase of 11,623 feet in 16 minutes, covering 124 nautical miles. The climb started 62 miles south of Jieshi, China.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its enroute descent, starting 94 miles southeast of Haimen, China. The descent from 33,371 feet to 990 feet, a decrease of 32,380 feet in 18 minutes, covered a distance of 114 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from 1,004 feet to 1,658 feet, an increase of 654 feet in 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles. The climb started 18 miles southwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The enroute level cruise started 16 miles west of Kaohsiung and lasted for 5 minutes, covering 14 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 09 at Kaohsiung International Airport (RCKH), heading 92.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,302 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 09 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 181 meters and a touchdown speed of 140 knots, which was slightly fast. The touchdown rate was hard at -438 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 26°C temperature and winds of 9 knots at 50 degrees.
The total landing distance was 1,567 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was significantly misaligned by 33.2 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxiied to the parking area, a process that took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 376 nautical miles, taking 66 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,931 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at RCKH Kaohsiung International Airport, but with some areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 92.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,302 feet above ground level. The aircraft touched down on runway 09, which has a length of 2,542 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 141 knots, indicating a good approach configuration. However, the touchdown speed of 140 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate of -438 feet per minute. This could potentially put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and may require further attention from the pilots to achieve a smoother touchdown.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.0 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach path. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 26°C and a moderate headwind of 7 knots. The crosswind component was relatively light at 6 knots, which should not have significantly impacted the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,567 meters was within the acceptable range, accounting for 62% of the runway length. However, the runway rollout alignment was significantly misaligned by 33.2 meters from the centerline, indicating a loss of directional control during the rollout phase. This may require further attention from the pilots to maintain a stable and aligned rollout.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown speed and runway rollout alignment. With some adjustments to their approach and landing techniques, the pilots can aim to achieve a smoother and more controlled landing.
