Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,834 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,340 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Vision Jet taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LSZS Samedan Airport, a process that took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 21, and the takeoff distance was 3,019 feet, which accounted for 53% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 92 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 49°F and winds of 2 knots at 80 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the tailwind was also 1 knot. The enroute climb started overhead Celerina, in the Kanton Graubunden region of Switzerland, and the aircraft climbed from 6,371 feet above sea level to 30,072 feet, an increase of 23,701 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 63 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile south of Tannheim, in the Tirol region of Austria, and lasted for 16 minutes, covering a distance of 81 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 2 miles northwest of Ederheim, in Bavaria, Germany, and the aircraft descended from 29,971 feet to 2,333 feet, a decrease of 27,638 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 49 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28 at EDDN Nuremberg Airport was made from the east, heading 278.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,292 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 28 took place on a runway with a length of 8,834 feet, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 75 knots, and the touchdown distance was 1,331 feet, which was 25% of the runway.
The touchdown speed was 62 knots, which was good, but the touchdown rate was fair at -212 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 25 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 59°F and winds of 4 knots at 179 degrees, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 2,190 feet, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 26 feet from the centreline. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 199 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 71 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 474 pounds.
The Vision Jet aircraft successfully landed at Nuremberg Airport (EDDN) with a score of 95.4%. The final approach was conducted from the east, heading 278.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,292 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 28, which has a length of 8,834 feet.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. The threshold speed of 75 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's speed during the landing. The touchdown distance of 1,331 feet was also good, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down within a reasonable distance from the start of the runway.
However, the touchdown speed of 62 knots was slightly lower than the expected speed, which may indicate that the pilot applied a bit too much braking or reverse thrust. The touchdown rate of -212 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft was able to touch down relatively smoothly, but could have been better.
One notable issue during the landing was the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position, which was 25 feet off the centreline. This may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's approach or a slight crosswind component. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 4 knots at 179°, were relatively calm, which should have made the landing easier.
The total landing distance of 2,190 feet was 25% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 26 feet from the centreline, which may indicate that the pilot had some difficulty controlling the aircraft's direction during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor issues that could be improved upon in future landings.
