Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,627 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,627 m of the 3,474 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 655 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by KLM on a Boeing 787 aircraft. The aircraft began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, which took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 34, and the takeoff distance was 1,461 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 167 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 27 knots at a direction of 319 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 12 knots and a headwind of 24 knots. The aircraft took off and began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile northwest of the airport. The climb was from an altitude of 1,016 feet above sea level to 27,169 feet, an increase of 26,152 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 53 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its enroute descent, which started 5 miles northwest of Qobustan. The descent was from an altitude of 27,168 feet to 3,819 feet, a decrease of 23,349 feet in 15 minutes, covering a distance of 57 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. This was followed by another descent, which started 8 miles north of Gabala International Airport. The descent was from an altitude of 3,273 feet to 2,492 feet, a decrease of 782 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16 at Gabala International Airport was from the north, with a heading of 167.0 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,356 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 16, which had a length of 3,474 meters. The threshold height at 114 feet above ground level was excessively over target, and the threshold speed was 154 knots. The touchdown point was 178 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 139 knots. The touchdown rate was very hard at -544 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.9 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at a direction of 130 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,485 meters, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.3 meters from the centerline.
The total flight distance was 127 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 43 minutes. The aircraft used 3,986 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 787-10 aircraft, painted in the KLM livery, successfully landed at UBBQ Gabala International Airport, but the landing was not without some issues. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north, heading 167.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,356 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 16, which has a length of 3,474 meters.
The aircraft touched down 178 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation. The touchdown speed was 139 knots, which is slightly above the threshold speed of 154 knots. The touchdown rate was particularly hard, at -544 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a rapid descent upon touchdown. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.9 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the hard touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 4°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 130°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions were not particularly challenging, but they may have played a role in the aircraft's performance during the landing.
The total landing distance was 1,485 meters, which is 43% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, but it is not uncommon for modern aircraft like the Boeing 787-10. However, the hard touchdown and slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position and rollout alignment are areas of concern that need to be addressed.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there are some issues that need to be investigated and addressed to ensure that future landings are smoother and more precise. The pilots and air traffic control team will need to review the flight data and assess the factors that contributed to the hard touchdown and misalignment.
