Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,989 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 869 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Edgley Optica aircraft took off from runway 14 at ENAN Andøya Airport, Andenes, Norway. Taxiing from the parking area to the runway took less than a minute and covered a distance of less than a nautical mile. The departure roll began, and the aircraft lifted off the ground at a speed of 47 knots, covering a takeoff distance of 363 feet, which was just 5% of the runway length.
As the aircraft climbed, it started to ascend from an altitude of 621 feet above sea level to 1,330 feet, an increase of 708 feet, in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The enroute climb began overhead ENAN Andøya Airport, Andenes. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, lasting 3 minutes, during which it covered a distance of 4 nautical miles, 1 mile south of the airport.
The enroute descent phase started 2 miles west of Andenes, where the aircraft descended from an altitude of 1,544 feet above sea level to 439 feet, a decrease of 1,105 feet, in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 14 at ENAN Andøya Airport, Andenes, was made from the northwest, heading 150.0°, at an altitude of 408 feet above ground level, and a distance of 1 nautical mile from the runway.
The landing on runway 14 was successful, with a touchdown speed of 38 knots, which was good, and a touchdown rate of -116 feet per minute, which was smooth. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the total landing distance was 940 feet, which was just 12% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The total flight distance was 9 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 9 minutes. The aircraft used -1 pound of fuel during the flight, indicating a slight fuel consumption. The local weather conditions during the flight were characterized by a temperature of 27°F and winds of 7 knots at 189°, with a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The Edgley Optica successfully completed a landing at ENAN Andøya Airport, Andenes, with a score of 100.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north-west, heading 150.0° at a distance of 1 nautical mile and an altitude of 408 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed on runway 14, which has a length of 7,989 feet. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 46 knots, which may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to slow down before touchdown.
The touchdown distance was good, measuring 858 feet, and the touchdown speed was also within acceptable limits at 38 knots. The touchdown rate was smooth, with a descent rate of -116 feet per minute (fpm), which is a good indication of the aircraft's stability and control during the landing. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 27°F and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 191°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots. These conditions were relatively calm, which may have contributed to the smoothness of the landing.
The total landing distance, including rollout, was 940 feet, which is only 12% of the runway length. This is a good indication of the aircraft's performance and the pilot's skill in executing a smooth and controlled landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft remained aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the Edgley Optica's landing at ENAN Andøya Airport, Andenes, was a textbook example of a well-executed landing, with a score of 100.0%. The aircraft's performance and the pilot's skill were evident in the smooth touchdown, good touchdown distance, and perfect runway alignment.
