Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,974 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,974 ft of the 10,779 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,180 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 16L at YSSY Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport. The takeoff distance was 4,381 feet, which was 61% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 163 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 59°F and wind speeds of 24 knots at 220°. The crosswind was 19 knots, while the headwind was 15 knots. After departing from Sydney, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile west of La Perouse, and climbed from 1,058 feet above sea level to 36,437 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,379 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 141 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started at a latitude of -33.9071479 and a longitude of 154.0467039, and lasted for 112 minutes, covering a distance of 904 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 110 miles southwest of NZRW Ruawai Aerodrome Dargaville, and descended from 36,223 feet above sea level to 3,343 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,880 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 12 miles southwest of Titirangi, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 8 miles south of Titirangi, and the aircraft descended from 2,904 feet above sea level to 1,266 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,638 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05R at NZAA Auckland International Airport was made from the west, heading 71.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,238 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 05R, which had a length of 10,779 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 145 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 1,179 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 141 knots. The touchdown rate was good at -166 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 43°F and wind speeds of 8 knots at 160°, with a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 5,712 feet, which was 53% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking from the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,175 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 179 minutes, using 15,538 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Auckland International Airport, achieving a high score of 99.4%. The final approach to runway 05R was conducted from the west, with a heading of 71.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a slightly above-target threshold speed of 145 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, with a touchdown distance of 1,179 feet, which is within acceptable limits. However, the touchdown speed of 141 knots was slightly faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilots may have needed to apply more braking force to slow down the aircraft. The touchdown rate of -166 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and consistent approach path. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 43°F and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 160°. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was negligible.
The total landing distance of 5,712 feet was 53% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and avoided any deviations from the centerline.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilots demonstrated good skills and judgment in executing the approach and landing. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and possibly in the application of braking force to slow down the aircraft after touchdown.
