Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,050 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 306 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an RJ85, then departed from runway 01 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA), with a takeoff distance of 825 meters, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 138 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions, with a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 22 knots at 350 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 22 knots. The aircraft climbed to a height of 29,356 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,324 feet from the initial altitude of 1,032 feet, in 25 minutes and covering a distance of 117 nautical miles.
The enroute climb started overhead the Washington Potomac Washington area, and the aircraft continued to climb until it reached its cruising altitude. The enroute level cruise started 13 miles south east of the Fairview Airport in Elkins, West Virginia, and lasted for 23 minutes, covering a distance of 152 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, starting 4 miles south west of Flatwoods, Kentucky. The descent from 29,646 feet above sea level to 2,206 feet above sea level, a decrease of 27,439 feet, took 21 minutes and covered a distance of 92 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 36R at Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport (KCVG) was made from the south, heading 360 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,297 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 36R was successful, with a touchdown distance of 304 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was 107 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -306 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 10 knots at 90 degrees, with a crosswind component of 10 knots and a headwind component of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 858 meters, which accounted for 28% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 368 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 79 minutes. The aircraft used 2,827 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The RJ85 aircraft successfully landed at KCVG Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport, achieving a high score of 97.3%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 360.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,297 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 36R, which has a length of 3,050 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 113 knots, which may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to flare earlier than expected. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 304 meters, and the touchdown speed of 107 knots was also within acceptable limits.
The touchdown rate was firm at -306 feet per minute (fpm), which is a typical rate for a commercial airliner. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.4 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path or a miscalculation by the pilot.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 3°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 90°. This resulted in a crosswind component of 10 knots, but no headwind component. The total landing distance was 858 meters, which is approximately 28% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled and the pilot made a good decision in terms of flare and touchdown.
Finally, the runway rollout alignment was reported as very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline after touchdown and during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was well-handled by the pilot.
