Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out. These checks are the approach's score.
At the 500 ft gate: centreline 3.8° off, against a 1° limit.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,201 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 415 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft taxied from the parking area to runway 07 at EGNT Newcastle Airport in less than 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 07, the Cessla 152 used 928 m of runway, representing 42 % of the available length, and lifted off at 65 kt; ambient temperature was 15 °C with a wind of 1 kt from 270°, a cross-wind of 0 kt and a tail-wind component of 1 kt.
Climb commenced overhead Dinnington, rising from 824 ft asl to 2,349 ft asl - a gain of 1,525 ft - in 3 minutes while covering 4 nm.
The cruise segment began 1 mile north-east of Stamfordham and lasted 4 minutes, during which the aircraft travelled 5 nm.
Descent started 1 mile north of Ponteland, descending from 2,436 ft asl to 1,237 ft asl - a loss of 1,200 ft - in 3 minutes and covering 5 nm.
On final approach to runway 07, the aircraft descended from 516 ft agl to 44 ft agl in 177 seconds and achieved the required stabilisation gate scores.
Landing on runway 07, which is 2,201 m long, the aircraft touched down after 413 m at a speed of 37 kt; the touchdown rate was minus 232 fpm and the touchdown point was 8.4 m off the centreline. The threshold speed of 48 kt was well below the target, and the total landing distance recorded was 711 m, equal to 32 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was noted to be slightly off centreline by 7.7 m.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 19 nm, lasted 14 minutes and consumed 3 kg of fuel.
The Cessna 152, scored 87.7 %, executed the final approach to runway 07 at EGNT Newcastle Airport, descending from 516 ft agl to 44 ft agl in 177 seconds and scoring on the stabilisation gates; local weather was 15 °C with wind 1 kt from 270°, cross-wind 0 kt and tail-wind 1 kt.
At threshold the height was good and the threshold speed was 48 kt, well below the target, with a reminder to take care not to stall.
Touchdown occurred 413 m down the runway at a speed of 37 kt, both judged good, with a touchdown rate of minus 232 fpm rated fair; the touchdown point was misaligned by 8.4 m from the centreline.
The total landing distance was 711 m, representing 32 % of the 2 201 m runway, and the rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 7.7 m from the centreline.
Refine centreline tracking to reduce the 8-meter touchdown offset and the 7-meter rollout drift, and monitor approach speed to keep it within the target range and avoid the low-speed margin observed at threshold.
