Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,114 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 409 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, Sirius, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at EGNT Newcastle Airport. This short taxiing process took less than a minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. Once at the runway, the departure roll commenced on runway 25, with the aircraft taking off after a distance of 184 meters, which accounted for only 9% of the runway's length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 59 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it entered a level cruise phase, starting overhead EGNT Newcastle Airport. This phase lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The local weather conditions during this time were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 1 knot at 270 degrees.
After the cruise phase, the aircraft began its final approach to runway 25 at EGNT Newcastle Airport. The approach was made from the north-east, with the aircraft heading at 243.0 degrees at an altitude of 81 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on the runway, with the threshold height being good and the threshold speed being achieved at 54 knots.
The touchdown distance was also good, with the aircraft coming to rest after a distance of 407 meters. The touchdown speed was 42 knots, and the touchdown rate was an excellent -54 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect after the landing. The local weather conditions during the landing were similar to those during the cruise phase, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 2 knots at 264 degrees.
The total landing distance was 607 meters, which accounted for 29% of the runway's length. The total flight distance was 2 nautical miles, and the flight used 1 kilogram of fuel. Overall, the flight was executed smoothly, with good performance and perfect alignment throughout.
The aircraft, identified as Sirius, successfully landed on runway 25 at EGNT Newcastle Airport with an impressive score of 99.2%. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 243.0° at an altitude of 81 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing was executed with precision, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 42 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed of 54 knots. The touchdown distance of 407 meters was also within the expected range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -54 feet per minute (fpm) was particularly noteworthy, as it demonstrated excellent control and stability during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle wind of 2 knots from 264°. This resulted in a minimal crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind of 1 knot, which did not pose any significant challenges to the landing.
The total landing distance of 607 meters was only 29% of the runway length, indicating a short and efficient landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability during the landing and rollout phases.
Overall, the landing of the Sirius aircraft on runway 25 at EGNT Newcastle Airport was a textbook example of a well-executed and safe landing, with the pilot demonstrating exceptional skill and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
